Rowan Gets It, Kinda

It’s always fun to pick on bearded lefties like the present Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams. He recently said that the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK “seems unavoidable”. For this, he’s receiving flak from many in the media.

The simple fact is: he’s unintentionally right.

As Melanie Phillips has detailed in her excellent book Londonistan, over the past two decades, England became the center for Islamic fundamentalism in the Western world: some of the 9/11 bombers had connections with mosques, schools, and groups in the UK. The British Government, the chattering classes and intellectual elites, and the established Church of England have almost universally– whenever it was really important– surrendered, appeased, and given in to the most militant elements of the immigrant Muslim community, in the name of fighting supposed ‘Islamophobia’, multiculturalism, getting the muslim vote, and avoiding unpleasantness.

The London suicide-bombings of 2005 should have served as a wake-up call, exposing as it did the networks of recruiting, financing, and extremist ideology and the promotion of Islamic terrorism. But the appeasement, self-delusion, and pandering to the ‘victimology’ Islamic fascism actually deepened. Londonistan is a last-minute warning to an England with no-go zones, official recognized polygamy, extremist mosques and schools, and organized terror-networks.

So– barring a serious infusion of reality, courage, Christianity, and democratic spine, the Archbishop of Canterbury may well be right: in fact, with sharia-friendly banking, the banning of books, and welfare for polygamy, sharia is already taking over parts of the UK. Unless England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and other threatened countries stand for their own history, democracy, and civilizational principles, they will suffer further trouble, divisions, and conflict.

Why not surrender, if nobody wants to defend who and what we are and stand for? So Britishness seems poised to end not with a bang, but an abject apology.

Within the immigrant communities themselves, moderates are betrayed by gutless Western officialdom and media, and by fear and silencing within their own community. Muslim communities at home and in the West suffer the greatest oppression by the fundamentalist minorities in their midst. It’s beyond ironic that many of them– who came to the West to live in peace and prosperity– have found the nightmare of Islamism arising in their midst, with much of the politically correct West unable and unwilling to respond and stand tough.

So while we whale on Rowan (and rightly so), let’s look beyond his surrender-talk and panicky white-flaggery and see the rising crescent-flag of jihad and extremist Islam over London, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris– and heed the warning.
