As for Steyn’s dreadful lack of edumacation, I’m a Master’s post-Grad 1/2 way to a Ph.D., and (1) find his positions quite cogent, even if I don’t agree with them all (2) more than a few doctorate and self-conscious;y ‘interleckshul’ sorts came across as parrots, climbers, wanna-bees, and sheep baaing after the required current fashions in scholarship and such.
Your argument is an ‘ad hominem’ attack (to the man, not the argument). Aside from his hair, choice of wardrobe, beard-trimming habits, dental work, shoes, mannerisms, and speech– what do you make of the civilizational melt-down he’s pointing out in the UK and elsewhere?

Deeper questions haunt me. While watching Diana West on how our immaturity is hurting us in our battle against Jihad, I pondered: as our imaginations and reason are starved, do we need bigger and better and ever-more vivid digital images blasted into our souls to stir some response? In living memory, people had only silent movies and radio-drama. We still see children ditch the latest toy to be enthralled with the box as a plaything.
Regurge, Rinse, Repeat
Increasingly, TV and movies are regurgitating 20th century pop culture as if we’re in some desert of the imagination, and only have our memories of TV and movie and fashions past to inspire us. Or, we get shallowly-disguised politically-correct teachiness, disguised as entertainment. Or, the cult of transgression in various forms.
Again, we get inspired to be and do nothing and particular by a stirring movie– but are not thereby in anyway morally moved to mirror the active courage and purpose we see in our imaginary heroes, even while there are real evils all around us needing remedy or defeat. Our imaginations become a stage for whoever wants to shovel entertainment onto it, as long as we are not rendered thoughtful or responsive to the message displayed.
ReImagine Up, People!
How far we have come from the origins of Western theatre, whether comedy or tragedy, upon the stages of Ancient Greece during her brief Golden Age of art, philosophy, theatre, and democracy. The genius of a Sophocles was to consider and critique important issues of the day, to move and enlighten and delight his audience– without teachiness or the power of our modern technology.
The loss of imagination in its moral dimensions also means we lose the capacity of vision. We lose sight of what to hope for, and how things might be made better; or how bad things can get, and what evils the enemies of Western civilization could imagine in their desire to conquer the world, or at least vandalize the current one. To quote that soon-to-be-banned Jew-made HateBook, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

That vision is first, heavenly, then inwardly for the soul, then out in the world. “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” establishes the order. In this, the Muslims are right to remind us of the primacy of faith: from it flows everything else, within and without. They are wrong in the idea of god they call us to follow, for he commands a sword, not a decision to follow.
That’s what built and sustained Western civilization; Canada and the U.S. and Britain and the rest; democracy, our freedoms and duties.
