Fools jump in where angels fear to tread!

Science cannot ‘prove’ metaphysical first principles like God; nor can science itself scientifically justify materialism or atheism/ agnosticism. First principles (logic, God’s existence, how we know anything) are not subjects for scientific debate– the “heavens declare the Glory of God “to someone who already knows and loves God, and the evidences of faith are not the evidences of science. Equally, materialism is actually an unscientific philosophical position, as are agnosticism and atheism: you cannot prove a negative (God does not exist), nor can you do it through theory, experiment, or scientific evidence. There is no test for ‘god-ness’.

Human Guinea-Pigs, 2008: Ontario Doctors

Is Ontario the experimental California of the Great White North? It appears so.

The particular form of fascism in Germany– statist, socialist, eugenicist, racist– meant that the resources of the state were all bent to the national purpose. That included the ‘culling’ of useless eaters, as well as the handicapped, the disabled, the mentally ill, and various classes of people deemed sub-human (homosexuals, gypsies, and others). Agents of the state (including doctors, nurses, and hospitals) were required to ‘do their part’.

Eugenics was the rising thing in the West, as well. Blacks, the poor, the genetically unfit– experts had plans galore for ‘improving the race’ all to the higher goal of eradicating disease, poverty, ignorance, and suffering. In this, Medicine marched in lock-step in Germany, the United states, and Canada. Much of this history has been whitewashed and forcibly forgotten since the 1940s, but the truth remains.

If God exists, and loves life as He appears to do, then under all possible life-sustaining circumastances (and those are far wider than we imagine), life will exist. Somewhere, that probably includes intelligent life, since it has already arisen at least once (on Earth). Whether any of that is close to us, or communicative, or is a race of ill-tempered orcs with big lasers looking for a free supply of man-flesh, is another matter. Only Star Trek Federation types assume it’s all unicorns and alien bunnies. That there is other intelligent life in existence is also a theological question: if God exists, then it is within his power to create non-embodied intelligences (otherwise known as angels, fallen or otherwise). So there: a few mysteries of the universe wrapped up for ya. You’re welcome. Cute & mostly harmless WebElves are NOT, in fact, aliens. ~

Canadian philosopher George Grant remarked that modernity is all about making (‘techne’ in the Greek)– if we have a problem, we fix it by making something– even if it means we’re making something to fix a problem previous technology (which we made) actually caused. Says Grant:

~ WHAT IS MOST SAD— and most revealing– about the Georgian-Russian conflict is the predictable reaction of some in the West. It’s becoming obvious that not a few progressives aren’t just of differing opinion– they’re not even on our SIDE. Due caution, humility, reflection, and care in the exercise of power is not the same thing as reflexively hating the West, and condemning everything we think, and do. We can still hope for their return, and remembrance that there is still good in the West: like Frodo with Gollum, or Gandalf and the defeated Saruman, we may yet hope that the good that is in the worst of us might grow and turn them to love the good, the true, and the best of our fallible civilization in these times. But we cannot afford to be naive: in the West, not all are on the same side, not working for the same ends. After all, buying all the pre-fab BushMcChimpyHitler conspiracist or a leftite Enviro-Weenie mental furniture is infinitely easier than thinking your way through things. ~
