Whew! Glad That’s All Over, Then

~ SO NOW THAT we’ve cleared up the whole ‘Free Mark Steyn’ contretemps with the Obersturnfuhrers of the BCHRT, surely it’s time for the smeartastic hate-factory known as FreeMarkSteyn to call it quits, wrap it up, ride into the sunset, break the big piñata, take down all the Steyn pictures and memorabilia off the wall, the Elmasry dartboard, the Franklin Mint Edition Ezra Levant menorah.. and the certified ZOG Club membership certificate.

Hmph. What do you think? Time to wrap this up? Has one of Canada’s top 25 political blogs done what it was supposed to, so make room for somebody else on Jago’s list?

Of course, as the noted Binks puts it:

“It’s very good news for Mark Steyn, of course, though not for his pocketbook.

But nothing has changed–  we still have quasi-judicial tribunals ruling on free speech, so the basic question still remains: does the government have the right to regulate free speech and thought in Canada?

Until we get some serious revision of the Human Rights Act, there’s nothing stopping anyone from walking up and slapping Steyn or Ezra Levant or whomever else they don’t like with any number of human rights complaints. Months of mock-trial, expensive layers, and trouble ensues again.

The ordinary Joe or Jane Canuck is no safer today than last year when this all started. The Human Rights Commissions have probably learned only two things: the internet bites back when bloggers get rolling on an issue; and don’t chew on famous and well-connected targets.”

What thinkest thou, O minions?

  1. I think there’s still plenty of room for Free Mark Steyn! in the blogosphere. Especially with said nameake’s patented ability to offend, who knows? There could be other human rights investigations in Mr. Steyn’s future.

  2. NOTHING has changed, and this site MUST continue. We MUST keep a spotlight on these thought Nazis, and we MUST keep the pressure on for change – preferably the complete removal of Section 13 from the human rights act.

The name of the site might be modified to FREE CANADIANS or whatever, but please ensure that Steyn On Line continues to link to it.

Unfortunately, Maclean’s magazine has become cowed and milquetoast over this, I’ve noticed. Also, it no longer features Mark Steyn. Hmm…

  3. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing…

Were it not for the many bloggers and commentators exerting political pressure in this case, Macleans would have almost certainly been convicted. That’s not the way our courts (or pseudo-courts) should operate, but it’s a fact.

Please keep at it… much work remains to be done.

  4. Binks, The BC verdict shows that your blog is needed more than ever. The would-be censors are hoping that you and other “human rights” monitors just lose interest and go away. Don’t do it!

Besides, what will you do? Go back to the Anglican beat?

  5. I hope (at least the conservative side of) the blogosphere has now learned that Freedom of Speech means Freedom of Speech for Everyone – not just for “Good Guys”, but for “Basement Nazis” as well.

Not recognising that from the beginning was a major boo boo. It seems some (*cough*LGF*cough*) still don’t get it.

  6. PLEASE stay. (Love the new name!)

You’re a crucial part of the stand against the HRC insanity, and those of us neighbors to the south trying to prevent that stuff from creeping into our own system count on you.

    Keep on truckin’!

  7. Keep going, the fight’s not done yet. Once the election’s over we need to use the combined voice you provide here to push the section 13 reform/repeal to the new government.

Besides, we’d miss you too much if you left.

  8. Freedom requires continuing vigilance.

The incestuous, rampant rats are still breathing. The infestations of shareep-creep are still breeding.

    With apologies to Mr. Churchill…

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in Canuckistan,
we shall fight on our laptops and desktops,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the Internet, we shall defend our Canada, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight in the newspapers,
we shall fight on the government grounds,
we shall fight in our homes and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills and on the plains,
we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this land or a large part of it were subjugated by that Colony of Human Rats (CHR), then our inalienable rights of Freedom inherent in all peoples everywhere, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, we would be liberated once again.

  9. The fight has just begun Binks, you are needed for the battles that will be waged in the future against the various HRCs across Canada.

I suspect the Conservative Bloggers will be targeted by the Political Islamist sin the future, without those brave souls the CIC would of ridden off into the sunset waving their Sharia Law flag in victory.

  10. I’m not Canadian, but then neither is Muhammad. Why should anything that is said or written about a non-Canadian (deity or otherwise) jeopardize the freedom of a Canadian citizen? If I were a Canadian citizen who cared about freedom of speech, I’d look into establishing a Legal Defense Fund, financed through private donations, to help defend those citizens who cannot afford to defend themselves against these pernicious laws and the bureaucracies that enforce them. Keep fighting the good fight!

  11. They will be back, and they’ll pick better targets next time. Ones that they can kick while they are down and hope will have a harder time of mobilizing support.

    Fire them all!

  12. Binks, I’m really late in weighing in and congratulating you on a job well done (I left a big Kudos to you on a Stand Firm thread re: the Steyn verdict a few days ago.) Your voice is still needed… This battle is much bigger than just Steyn. You rock, as always. May the Lord give wisdom & grace & clarity re: your blogging role in the days / weeks to come.

  13. I’m late with my endorsement/recommendation, but here goes:

Overall, I see us all as active participants in a great communications strategy to keep alive issues that the MSM and many Canadians themselves would prefer we shut up about. BUT SHUTTING UP NEVER SOLVED ANYTHING. Neither did ignoring things (are you hearing me, Stephen Harper?) or pretending their is no elephant in the room (most Lefties, academia, marxist and socialist political ideologues).

We must keep the pressure on. The MSM are USELESS. The people have the power; we must take back the controls.
