~ THEY HAD LONG TRAINED for it– some, like the Canadian 2nd Army, literally for years and years. They had given over their freedoms, their privacy, their whole young lives to training, discomfort, deprivation, isolation from family and friends and all they had known.
Now, here they were.. in storm-tossed LCIs [Landing Craft, Infantry]. These boots, this gear and gun, that buddy who you played poker with last night in the cavernous hold of the transport; that soldier vomiting, from a nervous or hungry or terrified stomach.
The ramp goes down. That beach.. those Germans.. those designated goals– bunker, gun, trench, building, bridge. Those bullets… go go go go go keep low, keep your gun out of the water make for the dune shit there goes somebody down in blood.. slow run with waterlogged boots and a pack shoot shoot gogogogogogogo…..
A Different War
Here it is– and here we are. Orwell thought it, from his compromised socialist brain, the will to power of our technological statist utopian tyranny.
Outside and within our walls, the others seek the glory of 1300 years ago– a Caliphate, a world submitted to sharia by threat or sword or nuclear weapons. Is this the shape of the next 30 years? TechnoUtopian Fascism versus a Caliphatist Jihad, with Christians and Jews and freedom lovers and ordinary folks caught between merciless millstones, grinding exceedingly fine, with blood running out everywhere?
I dunno– but the chances seem good.
Here it is. Our war. Our generation’s call to greatness– not because we are great, or worthy, or special, but because the times have great forces and consequences. Every choice has consequences– but that’s always true– but in such times of crisis and opportunity, each choice can be magnified ten or a hundred-fold or more.
Choices To Make
Says Tolkien via the words of Gandalf:
“It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.”
And of course the famous words of Gandalf to a worried and overwhelmed Frodo:
“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
And most importantly:
“Eomer said, ‘How is a man to judge what to do in such times?’
‘As he has ever judged,’ said Aragorn. ‘Good and evil have not changed since yesteryear, nor are they one thing among Elves and another among Men. It is a man’s part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house.”
We must seek and do the good; we must decide what to do with our times; and uproot the evil before us, so those after will not have both our work to do, and their own.
What Is Before Us
“The world really is starting
to alarmingly resemble a
William Gibson novel.
Or, dare I say it,
even one by Philip K. Dick.”
~ Hilary White ~
An overweening technological statism in the hands of unprincipled men, and an unaccountable partisan bureaucracy, is the single greatest threat to freedom ever devised by the hands of human beings, ever, anywhere. The whole planet is under surveillance; our shiny things and glowing screens are servants, but also turn out to be watchers of our thoughts, words, deeds, deepest secrets, voices, purchases, joys and sorrows.
Resist, Fight, Watch
Oddly enough, the very web which is being turned against us is also the providential God-given gift to free people of the West, if we will use it. Before the internet kill-switch comes, before the willingly obedient corporate slaves to Obamaniacal statism like Verizon, MicroSoft, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype, AOL, and AppleCorp finally choke the world in a technological second darkness, let us cry freedom. Let us remember our heroes, recent and of olden time, of D-Day beaches or The Somme, of sword and solemn oath, or Bible and classical witness.
Remember the Wallace, confronted by the massive force of the English, and the fickle support of bickering Scots nobles, and the terrorized Scots:
Dico Tibi Verum,
Libertas Optima Rerum:
Sub Nexu Vivito, Fili.
My Son, Freedom is best,
I tell thee true,
of all things to be won.
Then never live within the Bond of Slavery.
As I said a while back:
“…the battle spoken of by Wallace and Bruce is now everywhere, and in the hand of every man and woman who still loves the free West, and the fate of countless people now, and yet unborn.
This freedom is freedom under law, not mere license; it is freedom for each other, not selfish cafeteria individualism; it is freedom to do good, and be restrained from doing evil; freedom from bad government and tyrants, but ever seeking good rule, and just rulers. In that sense, the bureaucratic petty tyrant and the libertarian are twins, not opposites: they’re merely arguing over who makes the absolute rules– self or state.”
Oh, and whilst we’re at it, Teh Binks calls an almighty ITYS for his posting of a little while back: “Watching Through The Looking Glass“. Quote:
“In one sense, such cyber-schemery is also a grand illusion & joke on the powers that be– yet another misbegotten human attempt for certain powerful people to play God (over other people, and the future), trying to create a system so perfect that no-one will need to be good. Ain’t no such thing, There’s crime & sinners & saints & virtue in the strictest jailhouse.
The Lord God Almighty will (as always) laugh them to scorn– but the many questions remains.. how many laws will be broken, lives ruined, privacies invaded, governments become prison-guard states, and how much increased will be the sum total of human misery and degradation increased by the ever-deadly good intentions and unintended consequences of the mastery of technology over free peoples and the future? Nothing to see here: shrugs all ’round.. go back to your 400 channels and online puppies and pursuit of ever-staler pleasures.
At what price this notion of ‘security’? Too high, but the buying & paying for it is increasingly out of our hands.”
Wow. I kinda called it. Binks really is simply amazing, what?
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Who watches the watchers? You do. I do. It’s what free men and women can and must do. We forgot.
We all must, or we shall fall into a greater slavery and fear than Europe knew under Hitler, the USSR knew under Stalin, or than America is learning to know under Obama. The temptation to sheep-out will also be stronger than ever, because this will be a soft, shiny, cosy friendly totalitarianism, where the chains of media and comfort food and hoping it will all blow over and that Somebody Will Fix It™ will seem more inviting than ever.
If you are part of this demonic machine, you owe it to freedom and the future and your human decency to leak, record, expose, and pass on all the information you can. Some of you will need to find new jobs, or endure prison. Some, stay where you are to do some good.
Prizes For Heroism
Oh, and whilst we’re at it– a world-class medal of freedom for reporters Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill, over at the UK Guardian newspaper. Doing the work that almost none of the Lapdog Media in the entire U.S. of Obama can’t seem to sort out, for fear or lickspittling, or “just following orders”, or the love of tyranny and soft safety. Heroes.
Feel free to comment, disagree, correct, or supplement. This elf is not surveilling, controlling your speech, or watching through your shiny things & glowing screens.
I conclude with the words of a Facebook post by Bob Carter, responding to my thesis of TechUtopia versus Caliphate:
“That is a very interesting question, Binks. The parallels and potential juxtapositions jump started a lot of thought on this lazy Saturday. One could see this as a choice as you posed it, though that is probably too simple in reality. Phrasing it as a choice was brilliant and was the key to unlocking my interest. I hesitate to predict anything, having been embarrassed by predictions I have blown in the past. However, IMHO we are probably not facing a choice.
The technological utopian state is going to happen within a couple of decades. I see nothing in the national psyche that is likely to derail it. The ground is fertile, the seeds are well planted, and there is NO appetite to resist…. only to harvest as much as possible without breaking a sweat. The “caliphate” is a bit more iffy. One could predict, with some likelihood of being right, that all of the Middle East will devolve into such a regional delusion. This, of course, brings forth the choice that Israel has of either succumbing, or defending itself with preemptive nuclear strikes. That second choice could go anywhere at all in any conceivable measure of fire and blood. So let me leave that one alone for the moment.
Europe is another question. There is still a chance there that those nations separately, or through the EU, simply kick out or kill or imprison all Muslims. They wait too long to do this and they are indeed doomed to become client states of an eastern caliphate. Assuming that I am correct about the strong likelihood of a tech utopian (so called) state arising in America, and about the above projections re: the Middle East, Israel, and Europe, we are left surrounded and barricaded and attacked periodically with stabbing and sanguinary attacks from directions unanticipated from day to day. Unless, of course, a nuclear winter takes away all choices. Hopefully, God has other ideas.”
