MY NAME IS Binks Webelf, and I’m a fairly big guy (for my generation, at least). Actual big bones (the above is me at 2 1/2), 6′ in socks, shoulders as wide as a doorway– if I were anorexic weight, I’d still be about 175 pounds. Plus, I’ve battled weight (poor/ stress/ sugar eating) much of my adult life.
Behind the current fat-‘shaming’ and lunatic ‘body acceptance’ controversy, there is an actual health crisis afoot, which social media could cover, Mr. Crowder, and save a lot of lives: the sugar-powered metabolism, leading to metabolic syndrome. It’s the hidden plague ensickening and killing millions.
Stupid Science Men
Remember low-fat ‘The Balanced Diet’ idea? Much smart, so science, very brain! Wow!!
Idiot food-scientists in the past century thought people were like machines– what you put in, you get out. Thus, dietary fat became evil: less is good. Eating fatty food makes you a blob, they believed. Bad consequences ensue.
Their new rules (which I grew up with)? Fewer eggs, less butter, diet everything, artificial sweetners, only occasional bacon, no cheese or anything like it– and lots of that that horrible inedible skim milk blue water of starvation & death. Bleagh.
Reality check versus Science Men– that’s not how humans actually work: your body & cells burn fat, and parts of your body (brain, nerve-sheaths, cell-structures) are literally composed of certain kinds of fats. Ooops. Reality 1, Stupid Science Man 0.
What actually happens if you severely restrict fats, or else eat a junk-fat carb-sugar-soft-drink loaded diet? Disaster is what.
ALERT! Body Red Alert!
The body will consume whatever fuel it gets. It needs a mix of fats, veg, fruits, some carbs and the like, but can run (badly) on carbs (bread, carbs, SUGAR). In this case, the body literally starves for fat, since it’s running mostly on sugar. Fat? What fat? I got none, says the metabolism,– so the fat goes into emergency storage. Really.
Mostly running on sugar? You must be starving to have so little fat in your furnace! Then your system hits the “Store ALL The Fats!” alarm, and so you find a carb+sugar fueled person sometimes not necessarily eating very much, but their body is on red alert, and storing fats like mad. Fatter, and fatter, and fatter. Horribly ironic, no?
Lotsa False Cures
Mocking the fat is the one still-permissible cruelty in 2016. You can see in the flesh what you rightly or wrongly imagine to be that person’s sins: gluttony, greed, sloth. Bad fatty!
The usual slings & arrows? EAT LESS, YOU PIG! Or, TAKE A WALK, LARD BUTT! Eat less! Exercise more! Diet, you slob! Feel better?
Except, even when sugar-fueled people do this, they lose weight super-slowly, and what little dietary fat they have gets burnt up, leading to.. you guessed it.. another “Store ALL The Fats!” alarm. Metabolism slows even more; the body even starts to burn its own muscle., since it is starving of fat. Vicious “Store ALL The Fats!” circle speeds up.
It’s called Metabolic Syndrome, and it kills.
That’s when the fats turn into super-fats (triglycerides) and start getting glued into the liver (a form of inflammatory hepatitis), into arteries and, around the organs, and serious health problems & metabolic syndrome kicks in. The body can become almost resistant to insulin, because there’s so much sugar– and insulin around trying to control it– the cycle is out of control– type 2 diabetes ensues.
The Actual Cure
Cure? NOT to eat less, starvation diet, or all the usual very profitable DietInc. nonsense. The diet industry only wants you fat, and eternally trying to lose wight (and, ironically, starvation/ see-saw dieting can also ruin your health).
Read this book (and here’s the website)*, but moderate the suggested diet a little, because even cavepersons ate some carbs–roots, nuts, and the like– just as current stone-age people still do in 2016.
THE CURE– Cut the carbs & sugars waaaay back. Less breads, junk-food, and the like.
Do a low(er) carb/ higher fat/ veg semi paleo-style diet. After the fat alarms switch off, the body re-adjusts to burning fat instead of sugar-fuels, and consuming food– instead of hoarding fat and burning sugar– in real-time. Eat as much as your body needs– snack often, gorge less. Ditch all soda-pop, diet or super-saturated sugar. Both are toxic, in different ways.
You’ll feel hungry a lot more, and you’ll need to snack. You’ll start gradually losing weight, as the body no longer thinks it is starving to death from lack of life-giving fats. Combined with moderate exercise and enough food to fuel your activity, all of a sudden your body is operating as it should. Suddenly, EVERYTHING changes. Brain, energy, weight, eyesight, taste buds, recovery for exercise or injury.
Craving sugars? We’re all sugar addicts these days– have some fresh fruit instead. Mind you, this will also require some will-power, resolve, and self-discipline. Simply having the answer to a problem doesn’t solve the problem itself.
Learn up, and pass that on, and much of the politics of fat vs. thin will simply vanish. Yer welcome. ~
