What was one of the first things off the trucks after Hurricane Katrina? Cool, clear water- 200 000 cases in the first weeks. In those ubiquitous & hand-sized plastic bottles, full of liquefied dihydrogen monoxide**, H2O, sweet, sweeet Adams’ Ale.
Stick this in your craw, eco-flaky city-twerps: bottled water saves lives. Yes, even the dreaded plastic water-bottles of horror. What– you wanted poor blacks to die of dehydration?
Use Your Noggin
Imagine.. just for one moment.. your water-system fails. Or gets polluted.. or attacked.. or hit by a storm. What’s that? You need to refill it, you say? Here’s a plastic water bottle, of fresh, clean, unpolluted water.. oh wait– didn’t you and your ilk locally ban those last year? You are welcome to clutch your little aluminum water-container as hard as you wish, it will not pour forth water for you. Same for your Brita. Try the ditch, or the pond, or the lake. Word has it you can even drink your urine once or twice through. Best of luck, then.
Every rural dweller knows: water can’t be taken for granted. Many homes have wells, water coolers, filters & softeners, downspout barrels, and even bottled water big and small, Just In Case. Some communities have dodgy water-systems. Everywhere can get storms, power-failures, and other short or long-term emergencies. Every time a big storm threatens here, we grab an extra refill for the water-cooler.
Taken For Granted
It goes without saying that bottled water should be tested, clean, safe, and all that good stuff. Selling unhealthy water is evil, and bad business.
Time is long-past when micro-minded urbanites (and their idiot rural in-laws) should be dictating & banning and nagging based on the assumption that we’ll always have working & safe giant urban water-systems. This is a kind of blindness, as if They (The Nanny-State) have made things so safe and predictable that the proposed general banning of the convenient mass-production of bottled water in plastic water-bottles is a mere afterthought.
Because sometime, sooner or later, Just In Case comes along. ~

~ ANALOGY, or word-pictures, are the root of science and philosophy, as well as thinking and speaking. The a-tom (a Greek idea): the indivisible basic itty-bitty particle. Light? Kinda a particle (like an atom).. but also wave-like (like water), too –hence, not exactly easily described or nailed down. After all, analogy fails at a certain point because what is, is its own self, and not our “kinda like” word-pictures of it.
The problem comes when we forget that our language is not reality, and stuff is more mysterious than we might imagine. An August 2010 National Geographic article about prehistoric whales which I read during some recent pondering time in the Binkses’ washroom liberry struck me as falling into this subtle but serious confusion. Hence:
“Around 45 million years ago, as the advantages of a water environment drew whales farther out to sea, their necks compressed and stiffened to push more efficiently through the water, behind faces lengthening and sharpening like a ship’s prow. Hind legs thickened into pistons; toes stretched and grew webbing, so they resembled enormous duck’s feet tipped with tiny hooves inherited from their ungulate ancestors…. Selection pressure for this efficient style of locomotion favoured longer and more flexible spinal columns.”
And so on and so forth.
Here Comes Chuck
Dear olde Darwin was a progressive son of the industrial age, when the historical and material forces of improvement and development were taken for granted; when mechanical depictions of reality replaced older ideas of creation. ‘Evolution’ was as much about Michael Faraday, or steam engines, or the cotton gin as it was an accurate depiction of the complex reality of living beings and how they change over time.*
That is, the above description of prehistoric whales seems sounds like an inventor adjusting and improving his hand-crafted machine, and not actual evidence or proof of the theory itself. Clearly, the 19th century idea of everything getting better and brighter and more efficient.. you know, like the latest hot appliance with newer and better features than the previous model.. lies behind Darwin’s ideas, and the whale-researcher’s attempt to describe whale fossils.
Humans have habits of thought, often tied to the Big Ideas of the day. Why do we moderns assume things always get better? What about death? Mass extinctions? Why shouldn’t creatures devolve now and again? Oh wait– God redeems, remakes, transforms.. generally upwardly. Let’s keep the direction, ditch the deity, but hush-hush on where the upwards comes from, right? Mighty oaks come from tiny acorns!.. but the acorn didn’t make itself.
Sneaking In The Back
Of course, inventors and science-nerds do improve technology– or at least make it smaller and cheaper and all that. Every day is amazing in the world of technology, and human power.
Scientific materialism is a theory. ‘Evolution’ is dishonest if you boot any notion of divine agency out the front door, but sneak in mechanical inventor ideas in the back door. It’s a slight of hand, trying to hide creative forces inside the creation & creatures. Talking about ‘selection’ or ‘nature’ or ‘the universe’ or whatever, but having a scientific inventor idea in the rhetorical hind-pocket? Cheating.
Singer & Song
The alternatives are not and were never ‘science’ versus ‘religion’; nor God against evolution. If God makes things, surely it is in a somewhat more complicated way than an engineer makes a design, or a factory makes a car. That stuff tends upwards, that life tends to work really really well, that there are so many and various forms of life now, and in the fossil record? Neither a ‘proof’ of Darwinism, nor a simplistic creationism where God winds stuff up at the beginning and lets it race around with no further influence.
If God exists, then the relation of divine activity to the universe of created objects might be more like a singer and a song; or a face and a mirror; or a painter and his paintings– except the singer is livingly in the song as it is being sung, and as the notes also each sing themselves. It’s both-and, since (if he exists) God is not a creature, but the creator. Nor is his relation to individual elements or living beings in creation that of an inventor to a car. Sorry.. more analogies just there.
That makes more sense to me than self-inventing whales. ~

He consistently sends along books from Teh Wishlist every three or four months– and the last dose were great. New translations of Iliad & Odyssey; the Penguin edition of The Life Of Alfred The Great; and the prize of them all, Chesterton on War and Peace.
Everybody must read them some GK Chesterton– he’s funny, smart, to the point, and usually gets to the obvious.. and stays there.. years ahead of anybody else. The Mark Steyn of his time, except (dare we say it) evenbetter.
This book is a well-footnoted and appendixed edition of the best of his articles from the London Illustrated Weekly, before, during, and after The Great War, or WWI. He might as well be writing of 2011 as 1911.
Cometh Teh Steyn
Mark Steyn writes on the 10th anniversary of 9/11:
“..we commemorate an act of war as a “tragic event,” and we retreat to equivocation, cultural self-loathing, and utterly fraudulent misrepresentation about the events of the day. In the weeks after 9/11, Americans were enjoined to ask “Why do they hate us?” A better question is: “Why do they despise us?” And the quickest way to figure out the answer is to visit the Peace Quilt and the Wish Tree, the Crescent of Embrace and the Hole of Bureaucratic Inertia….”
In World War I, it was called Appeasement: peace at any price, even surrender. If this was not humiliated, defeated, and stabbed through the heart as a national ideology in World War I, it was only a matter of time before it rose anew to plague the world. He was writing in 1915 an onwards about that.. while German Corporal Adolf Hitler was busy in the trenches, not yet on a national stage.

England and America won the military side of that first war, but not the essential part. So, twenty years later, an even more demonic form of Prussianism metastasized across Europe, cooperating with racialist Imperial Japan, and a truly global world war began. And all that, despite years of denial and slavish appeasement from the Western powers. Imagine.

Post 9/11 (otherwise known as 1993 WTC Attack, Part Deux), with “Let’s Roll” by Neil Young, and Paul McCartney’s “Freedom” (both later semi-recanted as The Usual Multi-Culti Cowardice re-asserted itself), American political and religious and other differences were left aside– the United States was bloodied, and the human ash was still sifting down the streets of Manhattan. So okay, the songs weren’t great, but they were something.
Sadly, suckled on Soviet money and post-Vietnam angst, the appeasing spirit has not ceased from that day to this– we deserved it, why do they hate us, more dialogue. It’s sucking up to the Kaiser & moral insanity all over again.. except so much worse, for having failed in the 19-teens and the 1930s.
War, War War 24/7
True Jihad is perpetual war, until all submit. That’s why Mohammed and his successors speak of the Dar Al Islam (House Of Islam), and the Dar Al Harb (House Of War).
Some enlightened Muslim thinkers and writer extrapolated that into purely spiritual categories, but the Ottoman Empire continued the war of expansion & conversion well into the 17th century.. and they only stopped due to internal problems, and having their asses handed to them at the navel battle of Lepanto, and the twice-stopped Vienna excursions. Of course if you ask the Greeks and Armenians and Kurds about the loveable Turks and their Jihadified militarism, you’ll know the ugly hasn’t stopped.
Here’s the point: most of the Muslim world lives in the long past. They do not relate to the modern world, and much of what they do “know” about us is what comes across on TV & DVDs. Many Westerners do worship technology and the state and comfort and sexual freedom, not God. Sometimes Teh Binks wonders what our very own medieval ancestors would make of us (you know, the people after whom we are surnamed).. might they not be tempted to crusade against us, as cowardly post-Christian people who love evil and indolence and our own power?
This Means War
In any case, we’re at war.. and have been for 1400 years. It’s the true world war, since Mohammed the land-pirate and blasphemer and head-chopper got his conquest on in the early 600s. That war sometimes sleeps, or rages off our radar, but it’s always on, converting, destroying, mutating human nature into the image of Mohammed.
That 10% of the Muslim world is Jihadi and 40% supportive and 90% pro-global sharia law for everybody on earth? Them there’s the facts. Our cowardice or make-believe or self-hatred are an appeasing luxury, a form of madness, and the possible precursor to our slow self-defeat and surrender, if not religious civil war in Europe and North America.
Islam means “SUBMIT”– as in enslavement. It’s them or us, and the more we soft-pedal the facts, the more likely we are to win all the high-tech battles, and lose the war.

The assumption for the Americans onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) is to be a part of a disaster relief team in the Tsunami-stricken coastal regions of Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia. Why? Simple: 2000 years of “Do Unto Others.. Love Your Neighbour.. Good Samaritan.. As You Have Done Unto Me.. save the perishing” from God’s Son, and Christian morality arising from that about not withholding to do good when it lays in your power to do it. Every life is precious: lose not one victim.
Why? Because: it’s just what good people try and do. Humanity 101. Basic morality 1.0.
Operation Unified Assistance
So the men & women & aircraft & ships of the Lincoln carrier group & attached Airwing sprang into humanitarian action, called Operation Unified Assistance: food, water, medicine, rescue, whatever can be done, ASAP– time is of the essence with disasters. Around the world, donors gave and emergency teams were sent, to help everyone.
Except.. much of the Muslim world. Ordinary people in North America gave more than all the oil-rich nations of the Middle East, and they belatedly. Worse, the “They Had It Coming” notion of evil and suffering is Islam meant that to give to sufferers– i.e. sinners being punished by Allah– is giving aid to bad people.

Cruelty & Suspicion
Even worse, in radical Islamic enclaves like Aceh, suspicion of American motives meant they wanted the infidel Americans to go away, even before Operation Unified Assistance, or basic emergency rebuilding of utilities, bridges, and roads was in place. No matter if that attitude meant people needlessly starved or died or suffered: don’t want infidel crusader Christer cooties, and they must want something or they wouldn’t be helping. Plus, all those goodies and support should really be supporting the Jihad, too.
Again, the failure of Islamic theology to create or inspire a general humanitarianism– except under certain circumstances only for fellow Muslims– results from the problem of tribalist, conspiracist, and inward-looking radical Islam. While American Christians were trying to give freely, officially Muslim nations and local groups were suspicious and resistant– just because it was the Americans who had the power and opportunity to do good as and when needed.
Finally, And In Conclusion
The most common victims of backward Islamic theology and cold-hearted Muslim radicalism and inhumane stinginess? Muslims themselves. You know, cuz the crazy-war is most important. Mo’ said so– thus, this is his inhumanity passed down to others.
Some civilizations are simply better than others, in some respects and at certain times. If my Canucki region were hit by disaster, I’d look for the Americans to help, and not wait in vain for the “Glad Allah Beat You Up And Not Us” Saudi rescue-squads. ~

~ TEH BINKS HAS NOTED the costly new HBO fantasy-series now out, Game Of Thrones. In the genre of Tolkien or other such writers, this is American author George R. R. Martin’s bid for prime time blockbuster status.
But I’m not buying it.
I am going to try to see some of the TV version, but I’m not sure if I want to buy the book and clutter my mind with bad imitations of Tolkien; or worse, some goombah who is playing deity with a fantasy/ mystic story on the one hand, or the rehashed wars an backstabbery of English late medieval history on the other. That would be the often anachronistic and voyeuristic books/ TV adaptation of Pillars of the Earth, by the pompous UK Leftist Ken Follett.. a definite C+ effort, though the acting wasn’t too bad, given the material. I found the regurgitation of the first book in the sequel ‘World Without End’ was simply bad. Bad.
Been There, Geeked That?
Perhaps I’m prejudging George R. R. Martin, but I feel– as a once D&D nerd, wargamer, and fantasy book-reader– that I know this guy already. Clever but not wise, sceptical, uber-nerdly, fundamentally immature and inexperienced, absorbed in his sub-creations & a trivia-expert, but perhaps not truly humble enough to obey the muses, or interesting enough to spin an enduringly good and convincing story.. and hard on his characters.
Is his moral universe coherent, or decently pagan, or anti-Christian? I’m just not sure I want this nerd’s thoughts laying themselves down in my mind.
Does He Say So, Indeed?
“Beloved Fantasy Saga” says the cover? So trumpets the cover of one Martin book. Yes, we must to sell the books.
Whoa there, George, in the epic fantasy universe you’re up against Homer, the epic authors of Beowulf, the Finnish Kalevala, and the Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied; latterly J.R.R., E.R. Eddison, C.S. Lewis, Ursula K. Le Guin, George MacDonald, and a host of others. Only time will tell if you’re a high-flying nerd of the moment, or an artist for the ages.
After all, horrible and depraved people can still be good actors, and their characters better or nicer or more interesting than the person depicting them. Authors sub-create a universe, and depict adequately or inadequately what it is to be human, heroic, evil, and all the rest. In that sense, a Catholic or Christian mind sub-creates a recognizable and educative universe not simply by “I Say So”, but with a subtle and creative reflection of reality. By contrast, Phillip Pullman’s efforts are all about destroying, erasing, and mocking Christianity, the idea of truth, or the notion that fantasy writing should delight and form the imagination, by reflecting the mysteries of reality, good and evil, human nature and experience and all the rest. Anti-Narnia indeed.
Reserving Engagement
Anyhow, I’m gonna try an episode or two of the TV adaptation.. but this ye olde fantasy reader is treading lightly, for here there be dragons.. or what’s worse, derivative tiresome puffed up geeks. ~
P.S. Up to episode 3 now. Predicatable HBO-type titillation (yawn).. some decent acting in spots.. story is (so far) ugly 13th century Anglo-French backstabbery, with a thinly-disguised dose of Scottish-type Pictish sorts. Winter is coming. Big short talent Peter Dinklage is doing an interesting turn as a malevolent puppeteer of events.
~ DEMOCRACY IS MESSY, not as predictable as some utopians might prefer it, and sometimes lets Teh Little Peoples interfere in masterplans. That’s why Teh interwebs are ever under fresh threat of ‘supervision’ from one group of managers or another. The web is a dreadful hiccup in the management of information and the masses, dontcha know.

As Paul Johnson details in The Birth of the Modern: World Society 1815-1830, the radical cause attempted to push Britain into revolution, executions and neo-Napoleonic misery.. but it didn’t work, partly because of the flexibility of English democracy, economic development (no hungry masses marching for bread), and a general lack of support for the revolting.

That didn’t stop radical poets like Byron and Shelley & Keats from– in the terms of their day– trying to get the masses to “break on through to the other side”, because.. well, — um, er.. all would be better forever and ever, promise, guaranteed. We might suppose we’ve learnt better, but Utopianism is still much with us: big state welfarocracy & Eutopia & speech-codes and the death-grip of political correctness on our institutions of government, church, and education. There’s no howling mob or guillotines or firing-squads, just the slow stifling death of soul and hope and all that went before to the slow inexorable acids of institutional radicalism.
That’s why the true task of conservativism is to manage change slowly, always looking back, never wrecking or ruining the good through boredom or snobbery or impatience. There is a real and persistent human nature; there is truth and goodness and beauty; there is good and evil– in us, and the world. There is a God, and his will in ordering things toward the good.

What’s also ‘coincidental’ about so many of these radical sorts is the hanky-panky they are usually espousing, along with the rest of their radical relativism: whether the marital hijinks of the radical English poets, the creepy cousin-love of Hitler; the endless harems of Emperor Mao, or the whilst-married rub & tug of Canada’s incoming leader of the official opposition. You see, they have a high and lonely destiny, a greater morality than lesser mortals– whether it comes to advocating wreckifickation of their society, prison or death to their opposition, or a little of the old rumpy-bumpy.

~ TINY TALENT AL PACINO is a certifiable Shakespeare-nut. Witness his 1996 Looking for Richard (a “deeply-felt rumination on Shakespeare’s significance and relevance to the modern world through interviews and an in-depth analysis of “Richard III.”), and his powerful performance as Shylock in the 2004 movie A Merchant Of Venice. Plus, a stage version of that play with Pacino, via Shakespeare in the Park, and on Broadway. He says:
“In school we read Romeo and Juliette, I saw Marlon Brando in Julius Caesar. And all the great English actors. I talk in the movie with James Earl Jones about what it is like to be able to express yourself through Shakespeare. I enjoyed that.”
It’s a good thing, as long as it’s taught properly, and with insight into how the Bard speaks to all ages, especially one caught up in flickering screens and info overload. Chewing on great words and ideas, the great themes of life, plus an introduction to history, literature, and comedy, tragedy and drama? Priceless.
Recently, Binkling Spawn 2.0 had to do a short memorization passage. “There was a young man from Nantucket…” seemed wrong somehow, so I looked up a bit of Shaky Bill’s Julius Caesar. Hence part of a speech from Anthony, (Scene 3, Act1):
A curse shall light upon the limbs of men;
Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
Shall cumber all the parts of Italy;
Blood and destruction shall be so in use
And dreadful objects so familiar
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quarter’d with the hands of war;
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds:
And Caesar’s spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice

Sounds pretty much like the last century, and the daily coverage in the news of many palces and events.
The only problem I had with the 2004 film was that Michael Radford’s screenplay cut short so many scenes and speeches– I’ll be looking forward to seeing a Beeb or Royal Shakespeare Company version, since while for some filmed Shakespeare may not bear long speeches, Kenneth Branagh and others have not seen fit to chop and slash quite so freely.

Equally, Stephen Harper’s reluctance to officially review & push back on threats to Canadian free speech & the free press & free internet are very problematic– and that includes the Federal Human Right Kangaroos, the debacle at Caledonia, and his support of democracy-failing Julian Fantino. The upcoming web-muzzling C-51? Fail. Gun registry roll-back? Fail! Protected freedoms for Canuckistan? Fail.
Whether such matters are about not feeding the opposition, egg-walking for the electorate, micro-management and stubborn pride.. dunno. What he does in the next 4-5 years will shape and reshape Canada for a generation.. or fade into the fail-zone of recent Canadian politicos.

Don’t get me wrong– I come from a long line of techno-gadgeteers, geeks and nerd-spazzers, and have been so myself. I sometimes wonder if some far-ancient ancestor of my family got his inner geek rejoicing when someone figured out the new high-tech gift of pitch as the best way to keep torches burning in wind & rain. “Ungh! What they think of next?.. Og, pass iTorch 1.0, want to try new features again.” That’s a long way from the following.
“I didn’t use my cell phone all night. It was a difficult day… a horrible day,” said a student from Chile. “After this, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT MEDIA! I need my social webs, my cell phone, my Mac, my mp3 always!”
At what price shiny thing? No, not the actual mass-squanderage of iDollars for the latest gadget or reiteration thereof, but the integration of same into our souls and selves and time and waking and sleeping and thinking and relating and spiritual lives.. and lack of those same things. Anything but quiet & pondering? That inner dialogue of the self with self which is thought & conscience and the voice of the soul to God and God to the soul? No, stay addicted to shiny thing.. did we mention we’ve got 400 new shiny thing apps just today?
Seeing cool stuff on Star Trek and then actually having the equivalent in the real world (that’s partly where cell-phones came from) misses the point that those were props, and real communicators are very addicting, destructive of human life and relationships in the real world, and become a force for societal change. Technology begins to shape us, change our world, and make the deeper and quieter things of thought, appreciation, observation, inward digestion and contentment more rare, and harder to develop, or maintain.
Me, Myself, & I
I remember the literal terror and puzzlement of going on my first silent retreat, at a monastery. I was a TV-kid, and a voracious reader– but to be silent for 48-plus hours was a new experience, in which I found my sins and sorrows crying out, once I couldn’t ignore them. I met myself that weekend, which was a tremendous gift and surprise. From the bored/ puzzled look on some of the faces of the younger set at the Royal Wedding, being forced for 2 hours tech-fast, and to look at world-class architecture, listen to wonderful music, a good sermon, classic hymns, and the Biblically-formed prose of the 1662 Book Of Common Prayer was a bit much for their web-connected brains.
That’s what makes Google such a bad thing, too– by seeing to become the universal gateway to online media & computing, they are placing themselves as the new masters of the mind, of what is & is not news, their view of politics, world events, religion, and technology. Google wants to eat your brain.
Shiny thing NOT make it all better. Shiny thing– when not a sometimes tool or amusement– become baby-blanket, stupid-making shiny master, mental and visual and audio bubble-gum, not real food. ~

~ LIMESTONE IS POROUS– over the ages, water flows through it, carving out channels, underground rivers, even caves. Such are the hills south of Jerusalem, where on a ridge of that stone, a small town grew up, home to some of the Benjaminite tribe, and later hometown to a shepherd-boy who became a king: David. It was tribal home-town to a later Benjimanite, Joseph the Builder.
Those limestone caves were easy to finish, put up stalls, and use as barns– indeed families built homes over such caves, with ladders down to the bottom story in the cave, where the animals were safe. You could even carve leftover stone into mangers for the animals.
Entering Into History
A later Benjimanite– Joseph and his very pregnant young wife– Mary found shelter in one such stable/ cave, having travelled a week south from the highland town of Bethlehem; warm, safe, dry– for every spare room and inn the town was packed with members of the Benjamin tribe for the Imperial tax-census. One night, one of those limestone mangers in one of those little hill-side caves held something greater than the whole world, and all of creation itself. God’s Son, divinity itself, the Word by whom all things were made– He Himself entered the human neighbourhood, in a true myth greater than any before or since. On this fact, all that happened afterwards to this day is built, all is different, even whether you believe it or not.

Some Other Word?
It has been fashionable for the past 300 and more years to seek some mighty new word to replace The Word Made Flesh. Human good will; the rationality of science; mastering the masses; enslaving nature; cleansing the human herd; riches & comfort; seeking a glorious leader. In all these cases, we are offered a manger filled with various kinds of newfangled straw, entrancing rubbish, or bloody human sacrifices. Some of these things contain some truth or good– but not as an absolute.
Anything but God? Minus any consequences, unintended or otherwise?
The choices are the same, even if our power and self-intoxication and the evidence of our fallenness lies all about us even more than in the first century. Shall we worship the all-giving ‘divine’ Emperor– or his modern day elected or bureaucratic equivalents? Shall we be tempted to power over nature and others? In short, shall we worship as ultimate some lesser thing we select as god? An empty manger we fill as the spirit of the age, or whim, or fortune, or the strongest dictates to us?
The modern writers and thinkers who tell us myth is fantasy; that imagination and truth are opposed; that our unstories are better than The Greatest Story; who contrast their new-minted wisdoms with the alleged foolishness and credulity of faith and past ages… whether Dawkins or Voltaire, Hume or Hitchens.
We now live on the very fumes of faith and the moral, spiritual, and material capital handed on to us– and we are poised on two fronts against militant Westerners those who would punish and outlaw that faith and enslave society, and those who would erase it in the name of the Muslim war-cult.
Back To Basics
Bethlehem is the real choice, not utopia, or shariah. The Word Incarnate– Jesus of Nazareth, sacrificed, risen, ascended, is the fundamental question of world civilization, and the West in particular. That’s the malice and the choice which truly lies behind the present war on the church, and the cultural War On Christmas.
As Hitler and the Stalinists and the Utopitards all know, the only threat greater than the family & individual freedom is God & the church, on whom all is founded. These things are prior and higher than any regulation, dictator, master-plan, or the like. Our human sin and folly is to love the gift, and hate the giver; to want the good things God has provided, but to resent his claim and rule over us.
Capturing Our Hearts
That’s why his first appearing amongst us is so humbly mighty– as a baby, born in a cave-stable, laid in a straw-filled manger, to first capture our love, that he might then capture our souls and minds and wills, and so transform the world, and save each one, and all things.
Remember: I am a son of this age, a lover of philosophy, science, art, literature, astronomy, history, and all together are my mind– there are no infallible ‘unproofs’ of God, glittering goodies, dictators or master-plans which have not tempted or touched me and mine.
Come kneel awhile with me at the manger, and perhaps see with fresh eyes and a loving heart what might be our eternal true, and good, and beautiful. ~
~ THE SOVIETS & NAZIS showed us the way totalist regimes think and act– and how totalists go about things. Show-trials were a necessary part of the process: that a parody of justice be seen to be done to the ‘guilty’ enemies of the regime. The laughability & injustice were part of the show: such folks were so obviously enemies of all that was right and good that they deserved nothing more.
Political correctness, and totalist Islam are all about the show. Truth be damned. Facts make for messy trials.
Inside & Outside
So now in the West, we have totalist same-sex activists and their supporters forbidding facts, outlawing truth, or even the repeating of their own words by their ‘enemies’.
As I once said to my local GP (a great guy, but liberal), biology has a certain character. I asked him a simple question when the topic of same-sexuality somehow came up “Is the rectum a sexual organ?” Of course, I got no answer.
Nonetheless, keys are made for locks. Sodomy is inherently unhealthy, and damaging to the rectum. Such damage leads to countless other illnesses and consequences. Millions have died over the past 40 years and more for the political games of pride extremism, denial, and misplaced sympathy… with millions of others made sick, bereaved, or bullied besides.
Ever since there have been people, people have sexed up all sorts of people, things, and animals. Whether they should, whether it’s good or holy, whether its the best way for humanity to proceed– those are separate questions from the facts that some people engage in various sorts of sexual behaviour. Western humanity has generally ruled out incest, sodomy, bestiality, sex with children, adultery, and hedged the holy power of sex and procreation and one of the highest and most basic human pleasures with law, protections for men and women and children– to harness that creative power for good, and building things up, for civilization and hope.
O, The Fragile Adults
We deconstruct and breach taboo and rewrite marriage as if we were children heedlessly chopping holes in the Mona Lisa– except we are not children, but wayward and destructive folks who will our will, and consequences be damned. Then, some would even try to muzzle people pointing out the damnable consequences of our war on God and nature and human wisdom.
If it bullies like a fascist, sounds like a show-trial, and looks like the crushing of freedom, it probably is. Down with pride extremism, fascistic or soft-pedalled, and that politically correct mindset behind it that would outlaw uncomfortable truth and muzzle critics, whistle-blowers, and rebels against false faux-orthodoxy.
As for sex with youth, while more sexual abuse is committed by the mainstream male population– but that’s statistics. If same-sex males represent 1% of the populations, the question is not the number, but the proportion of sex-crimes committed per capita. In one study in New Zealand, 40% of sex-abuse involving youth was committed by a segment of the population of gay men. That is, a small percentage of 1% of the population committed a large amount of child abuse.
Another Example
It’s like Muslims & honour killing, cousin-incest, and jihadism. A minority within a small population may be the bad actors, but the refusal of that community to self-police is the real issue. Instead of militant gays crowing over the legal whapping of Charles McVety, perhaps they might address the issue.. oh, never mind: they’re the victims here– even if a large number of gay men themselves were victims of male-on-male rape when they were children or youth.
Let’s just keep the lies, the bullying, and the tide of suffering and death going, eh boys & girls? ~
~ IF DOING EVIL were utterly hard and totally obvious, why that would make being good so much easier. But evil comes with a tinge of truth and attractiveness.. it speaks to the “But I’m God!” in all of us.. and it usually makes things easier.
So we’d gone for the OB/Gyn appointment for the twins, and the doctor– as if he were discussing any old thing, suggested we should off one of the twins (probably Steeb, who was always runty in utero– now 5’11”), to ‘promote the viability’ of the surviving twin, and help maternal health, since it was promising to be a difficult pregnancy.
Wow.
There we were, all excited, on the pregnancy track, reading the preparatory books, stocking up on goodies, doing the baby room, obviously wanting babies and She-Binks to be well, and suddenly Dr. Mengele is asking us to choose who should be murdered. It was like an axe-murderer arriving at a picnic, or a hostage situation at a wedding. My wife and I locked eyes, and then I looked at the man who was willing to murder one of our pre-born twin boys for ‘medical reasons’.
“Um, doctor, we’re Christians. That’s not an option we could ever consider.”
Then he looked at us as if we had ripped off our human masks and been revealed as horrific aliens.
Neither of us fear death as such, believing in God and eternity; nor are we willing to do evil that theoretical good might result; and we knew that having babies is sometimes painful & risky, and ‘maximizing outcomes’ is atheist-talk for using technical power to achieve something.
So the culture of death spreads the icy tentacles of killing and dehumanizing other humans through ordinary doctors to everybody as it it’s about taking vitamins. Shame on us.
Worse, we could have cheerfully and legally executed our pre-born child in the very same Canada where parents can be jailed and fined for spanking a child. This is moral insanity, to justify the eugenics and death-politics of feminism, and a corrupted medical system which has allowed itself to become the slave of the worst human devices and desires. ~
Vive Le Vent D’hiver
~ AS I ROAST NUTS AND quaff elf-nog by the open fire, with snow falling gently outside, I’m glad to live now and not in the 10th century. But I wonder: do modern women appreciate the manly-work involved in creating modern civilization, generally minus plague, wolves, bandits, hard work, cold, high maternal mortality, malnutrition, and beating the laundry on rocks by the waterside?
Probably not. However, the benefit of all this goodness has made many folks somewhat dependent on that civilization for everything. We don’t need guns, survival skills, an ability to hunt & fish, the ability to fight, build a shelter. We see the evidence when a storm hits, or the power goes down, or some other emergency hits.
I’m just gonna say: we’re gonna be sheep, or wolves, or shepherds. Do you have a go-bag, in case you have to leave home ASAP.. do you have 72 hours of emergency supplies? Two weeks of backup meds for family and self? A source of alternative heat for your residence? Basic first-aid knowledge? The ability to defend yourself and others? Sheep count on others to save them; wolves look for sheep in distress; sheepdogs kill wolves and protect the flock.
Be a sheepdog– because the life you save might just be your own. ~
P.S. Just after I wrote the above, a mini-hurricane known locally as a “Nor’ Easter” roared in and knock the area about & blew @ 120kph (that’s 75mph for you normal people). We lost power for 18 hours.. but we had it all under control. Other nearby towns have been out for 48 hours. God be thanked for the men with power-trucks, chainsaws and skill to fix everything.

In the first 3 months of 2010 alone, Delta Airlines pocketed $769 million+ out of air-traveller’s pockets for the infamous “baggage fees” (like those delightful “because we say so” arbitrary bank-fees, except from airlines– as if air passengers should be travelling naked). It’s all about clawing back some of the money lost after the 9-11 air-travel & tourism collapse & rising fuel costs, from the people actually willing to travel. That amounts to a juicy $3.076 billion a year.
Now Delta has blown a gasket over SeV, and refused their ad-money over the “avoid extra baggage fees” phrase and idea. In response, Jordan has taken this David vs. Goliath fight public.
A couple years ago, United Airlines learned a lesson the hard way about mistreating luggage and ignoring complaints– and the more general problem of treating the air-travelling public like cattle (see vid below). Delta may be thinking it`s their mega-corp versus some little twerp, but word of this is spreading via social media & YouTube and FaceBook, and the customers are not amused. Way to throw away money and goodwill, Delta– I’ll be avoiding your services until you get a clue. ~

It’s why Barack Obama seems cold, off-key, and a bit strange, even to many leading Democrats and liberals: he’s not truly an American Leftist, Democrat, or progressive– because he’s only superficially an American, nor truly & deeply an Afro-American. This anti-colonialist world-view explains his roundabout language and TelePrompterism, since he must always be interpreting & re-wording his actual views & motivations; it connects his family’s own deep radicalism with that of his mentors and professors and advisors and even his former pastor, the anti-Colonialist pastor Jeremiah Wright.
It’s also why people who do love America are right to suspect that their President is trying to cripple and bankrupt the U.S. into submission and weakness on the world-stage. He is.
Hopes Vs. Realities
Sad to say, the bright lights of post-war African independence saw their newly emergent nations crippled by dictatorships, debt, corruption, military coups, tribal rivalries, Islamic expansionism, civil wars, Cold War geo-politics, and the real-world difficulties of home rule versus chafing against imperialism. Africa today is full of hope, and suffering, disease and war– and still dependent on hand-outs from the West: the hopeful Marxism of Obama Sr. and his peers did not create their new Africa.
Yet the strange figure of Obama– living out the rage and vengeance he believes America should be punished for– means that he is living in the past, and at one remove from his real duties and responsibilities, and in a merciless distance from the people he promised to serve as President.
Thus D’Souza’s theory makes a lot of sense– for instance– of Obama`s shrugs and golfing and parties and offhand attitudes to the astonishing unemployment levels in America, along with business failures, despair, and the real threat of the collapse of the American dollar and economy, oil spills, or disasters. It’s as if some part of his unAmerican soul is saying “So what? You had it coming, and I’m here to bring it to you.” It’s Marx meets Robert Mugabe meets Prof. Edward Said meets DC spin-doctors.

The recent prostitution ruling in Ontario by another liberal judge is based on Trudeau’s desire to be the second founding father of Canada– remade in his own image and likeness. Central to that was an abstract Euro-style document– a made-in Canada Constitution & Charter of Rights & Freedoms. Lust for that all-holy page in history has driven many folks to extremes.
Chaos & Swindling
In the blundering political free-for-all that was the constitutional conference, it was not a meeting of great minds distilling the best of British and Western legal and constitutional law, seeking to fashion a constitution and charter of rights and freedoms for the ages. It was a horse-trading mess, where everything was up for grabs because it was essentially Trudeau and the then-Premiers of Canada squabbling over this and that and getting the most for their own constituencies.
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is the worst part of that political car-wreck– it creates a court-driven legal process, where judges have power to make and rewrite and strike down laws; plus, it essentially rewards those who seek to accrue rights for themselves or their interest group. The one with the most lawyers and court-enforced rights wins; the majority, or those without hyphens or grievances, are ‘less’ Canadian, less legally real.
Ugly Consequences
What if you don’t go along enthusiastically with the invented laws of the new regime? Then you are– as former Prime Minister Paul Martin infamously said of opponents of same-sex ‘marriage’ after that right was discovered by the courts– that such opponents were not mistaken or honestly of a different view– they were “unCanadian”.
So abortion law? Ruled unconstitutional. Man-woman marriage? Unconstitutional. The Charter has fragmented Canada into groups, and set Canadians against one another, and judge-backed minorities against the majority.
True constitutional thought by Canadian philosophers like James Doull, George Grant, or other constitutionalist legal experts? Unconsulted. A lasting and true solution to the French-English issue? Not so much. Social and political peace with all the issues confronting us from 1982 to 2010? Keep dreaming. The central documents of neo-Canada are all about unravelling what was, and making a new hyper-powerful judicial ruling elite, setting aside the legitimate powers of provincial legislatures, or Parliament itself.
King Pete? A Fail
So Trudeau must be judged a failure in his desire to cut Canada from her British legal roots, replacing that with a working & historic alternative. The legal civil wars, rampant minoritarianism & activist judges cheerfully blurring the line between interpreting law and advocating for politically correct outcomes– all may be laid at Trudeau’s feet.
It’s made lotsa business for lawyers & activists, but otherwise has not made Canada a more stable, legally and socially coherent modern nation, the true north strong and free, born of two founding nations. This is the fundamental weakness behind all news headlines & free-speech fights and creeping sharia and politics as usual in Ottawa.

~ ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS— Professor Harvey Mansfield of Harvard (yes, I know). In a time when too many academics are tainted with radical politics, and rendered intellectually malignant, it`s good to find a real thinker, hidden in one of the rich & ivyed hotbeds of crazy.
One of the favourite late Renaissance/ protestant sideswipes against Medieval scholars was that they mostly wasted their lives arguing how many angels could dance on the head of a pin. Pure polemics, meant to score points at the cost of truth: it never happened.
Dorothy L. Sayers argued that the question was “simply a debating exercise” and that the answer “usually adjudged correct” was that “angels are pure intelligences, not material, but limited, so that they have location in space, but not extension.” Sayers compares the question to that of how many people’s thoughts can be concentrated upon a particular pin at the same time. The answer, therefore, is that an infinity of angels can be located on the head of a pin, since they do not occupy any space there.
One might wish many current academics did not actually waste time & thought on the modern version of angels & pinheads, like Women`s studies, critical theory, same-sex studies, race studies– and all the other trickle-down Marxism of the new Left, following on the radicalizing ideas of The Frankfurt School. Such impoverishing group-think excludes all other ideas– especially anything like the older liberal tradition of patiently learning what everybody ever thought from Moses & Plato onwards, so actual thought might break out, and you’d actually have something informed and useful and truthful to say. Heaven forbid.
Professor Mansfield is proudly of the older understanding. Beloved by thoughtful students, a hard marker, a conservative thinker, he has used his tenure not to hide and hive with liberals and political correctness, but to speak out, teach boldly, and to defy the intellectual death-cult which has overtaken many Western and American universities since the advent of the radical Left.
