Canadians has the dumb, because we’re only used to fighting evil tyrants ELSEWHERE, and not at home. It’s why the recent crop, from Trudeau, Chretien, Martin & Co. all the way to Junior, have gotten away with so much.
We assume that government is benign & mostly harmless. That the horrors of Mahometism or Marxianism somehow don’t have any effect on us, and that they wouldn’t want to use, abuse, or hurt us. That we can actually half-knowingly do Sex-Revolution evil like convenience abortion, euthanasia, fornication, and all the rest, and still be “basically good people”.
Just Say No. Again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again…
.. until they get the point, or get butthurt and go away, or actually get a clue.

Boycott Han Soylo, The Movie!
Saith Teh Binks:
Powerful Social Justice Warriors– like some movie-makers today COFF StarWars COFF– are like the kids who show up, hurt other kids and break things, and then crow about it.
Star Wars is/ was a cultural thing to enjoy for our times. SJWs are spoilers, mean-spirited hyper-Puritans who get joy out of preventing other people having joys. It’s a spiritual disease, a false religion, a smug holier than thou hypocrisy with delusions of grandeur.
Join The Boycott Army. Just say no to SJW story-molesting, and man-hating.
Stalin: One death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic. The tragedy of this sick boy has focussed the billion killed by the current culture of death for many people in a way it’s been hard to do before.
World War III? We are already waging war on ourselves: against the unborn, sick born, chronically ill, disabled, mentally handicapped, elderly sick.. the statistics mount up every day, only our gulags & Auschwitzes are hospitals and clinics and medical wards, so it’s hidden and we can pretend to ignore it.
I still think about the fact that the medical waste incinerator for the main Halifax hospital (where the abortions were done) cast those baby-ashes over the nearby neighbourhoods, my school, and the children’s hospital just up the block.
I remember the smell, and the little smutches of ash and soot that would sometimes get on your skin & clothes during recess and lunch hour.
“SJWs don’t need proof. They just need to declare something makes them feel unsafe, and thus is super bad, and has to go or else. They’ve got emotion and outrage. So they pitched a big bitch fest. It was all the usual accusatory stuff, misogynistic, homophobic, racist etc. (and their examples? Nothing from real life, just a couple of his FICTIONAL characters bad behavior from among the thousands of fictional characters he’s written).”
“Vatican. Your holiness. Have you gone mad? What are you trying to prove? Break off the ambiguity! Holiness, we have bishops giving communion to the divorced and remarried here. If you can hear us, stop the confusion! Holiness, why don’t you answer our Dubia? Holiness! Answer! Come in, Holiness!”
This entire episode has been a nightmare of cold and twisted official hubris in action, but none of it more disturbing than that exhibited by the Catholic Bishops of England. They will be held to account.
I am struck by the early remarks of Paglia which stress the pain of the parents in such a way as to make it seem a little bit selfish. Naturally they are thinking of the personal loss if they lose their child. But i’ve also had the sense that both parents are enraged by the larger issue of what it means to have the government take ownership of anyone’s child.
I don’t think for one minute that they cherished any great hope of a cure and a normal long life for Alfie — that they ever considered putting him through the degrading process of artificially prolonging his physical functions indefinitely, which would indeed have been a selfish act. They knew it was a judgement call, based on his responsiveness and general health. Anyone who looked at that child could see that he did not fit the definition of “failure to thrive” — he had healthy looking skin, full and glossy hair, was bright-eyed, plump and well-nourished. What he was NOT was (in words the authorities were careful not to use) “cost effective”.
Watching and waiting, lavishing him with care and love until he was insensible to it, was never going to add up to progress or improvement. But it would have been filled with grace and peace. Doctors used to care about the healing power of a graceful death. Government used to understand it as a right. Bishops used to recognize it as a sacramental necessity. All those with power and authority failed abysmally.
~ WISE WORDS worth pondering, about where we are in 2016, spiritually, and what it all means in the light of Holy Week, Good Friday, and Easter. The article is by commentator and freelance writer (and lucky friend of Binks), Miss Hilary White.
I’m a guy from Brooklyn who attends the Traditional Mass at Holy Innocents Church in New York City.
I don’t know if you have heard anything about the impending closure of my parish, Holy Innocents. It is the central church for tradition in the archdiocese of New York, with a daily TLM (Traditional Latin Mass).
Oh, we have the standard Mass in English there as well. We have no debt. The congregation is growing. We just went through a tremendous rehabilitation of our mural, which was painted by Constantino Brumidi, the artist who later painted the U.S. Capitol. See here:
All of this was done by the congregation raising money or, in my own case, using my construction skills sometimes literally on my hands and knees for hours, working and sweating to help rehabilitate the church building.
On The Other Hand
The archdiocese is currently rehabilitating St. Patrick’s Cathedral to the tune of $200 million, and it needs money big-time. To save costs, it recently announced that it was looking to close a number of parish churches in Manhattan.
Fair enough. There are too many churches in Manhattan left over from when the Church was strong in New York. However, we are on the top of the list. Interestingly, one of the Manhattan churches that holds LGBT Masses is not on the list:
Father Justin Wylie, who was attached to the United Nations, preached the following sermon at mass a few weeks ago. I was in the front row, and I was so excited I almost jumped up and shouted (but didn’t, not in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament and during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass–I AM a Traditionalist Catholic).
Here’s a post by Catholic blogger ‘Father Z’ with the transcript. Please take a moment to read it:
It seems that the archdiocese of New York has not only yanked Fr. Wylie’s permission to say Mass in New York, it’s written letters to the UN delegation and father Wylie’s diocese, and he’ll be officially kicked out of New York City shortly:
This is not made up. This is not drama. I know Father Wylie personally. I know that Traditionalists often come off as paranoid. But remember the old joke that just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean that they’re not out to get you.
Please, read Father Wylie’s sermon. If there really was anything in there warranting his immediate silencing and expulsion, please point it out to me.
If not — if you see any questionable procedures or outright injustice in this maneuver by the archdiocese — I ask you to publicize it.
~ WATCH HOW Petty-tyranny grows. The current New Hampshire State Motto– Live Free Or Die! Possible new version: Keep Quiet, or get arrested. Remember: author & freespeecher Mark Steyn moved there from Canada to enjoy some freedom from arbitrary and malicious state power. Oops.
So: a school effs up with notifications about an iffy book, then a concerned Dad (William Baer) speaks up about his concerns, and ends up.. arrested & handcuffed for no actual crime? Here’s the story. Here’s the video: “William Baer, a parent upset over a reading selection in Gilford, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct when police said he did not leave a school board meeting after being asked.”
Fut The Wuck?!?
Did you see what just happened in that video? “Two Minute Rule Trumps Freedom, Rights”. Or, petty school board honcho (Sue Allen?) gets her Hitler on.
What kind of America is this?
Who the heck does this bully-cop think he is?
Why are schools porning-up kids, without parental permission, or opt-outs?
Since when is the “Two Minute Rule” state or local law?
The Cop needs to be fired, the school-board needs to be held accountable, the school board woman who brought the cop into play needs to be fired, and both she and the cop and the people responsible for this fiasco civilly sued, and the full story needs to be told. Their uppance needs to come,if things happened as they appear to have done.
What’s worse than the arrest? A terrible shame that the other parents sat there like obedient robots, while an armed agent of state power interfered with their neighbour’s freedom & rights. At. A. School. Meeting.
‘Live Free Or Die‘ is a partial quote from New Hampshire’s most famous Revolutionary War General, John Stark. He said, in full, “Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.“
Is that still true in 2014? Not the idea, but that most comfy moderns would be willing to endure death rather than submit willingly to evil? Back in the 13th century, William Wallace, an educated man, treasured his family wisdom:
My Son, Freedom is best, I tell thee true, of all things to be won. Then never live within the Bond of Slavery.
Or if Braveheart is too ancient for you, how about 20th century hero Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn?
“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”
We Know Better
If people are not willing to go through inconvenience, or suffer, let alone possibly face death to defend and live out their deepest convictions, then where are we, really? Freedoms die one at a time, people get harrassed, arrested, IRS-raped, handcuffed, NSA-snooped, free speech is chilled and frozen. The sons and daughters of America the free become tax-cows, slavish minions, willing accomplices in the growing & fearful servility of their neighbours, their children, themselves, and future generations.
Ideas matter. Words matter. Actions matter. The U.S. is becoming a potential police state in too many ways to be listed, and all that is needed for the hirelings and bully-boys to conquer is that all the sheep, the sheepdogs, and shepherds keep quiet, so nobody gets hurt.
Wake up, sheeple. The wolfish are licking their chops.
Be a sheepdog, even if it costs you something– especially if it costs you something. ~

If not a healing or miracle, may God grant her a good death, and peace at the last.. and the eternal joys which belong to those who belong to Jesus. ~
~ A MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE hits the India Ocean in late 2004; the resulting tsunami killed a quarter million people, and destroyed homes, villages, and whole regions.
What to do? The American Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) was operating in the Indian Ocean off the waters of Indonesia and Thailand. A modern super-carrier is the most powerful weapons platform in history– but more than that, it’s a portable power station, supply ship, kitchen & bakery, modern hospital & ER, search & rescue platform, airport, water purification plant, and much more– all that, plus 5000 trained & committed people.
The assumption for the Americans onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) is to be a part of a disaster relief team in the Tsunami-stricken coastal regions of Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia. Why? Simple: 2000 years of “Do Unto Others.. Love Your Neighbour.. Good Samaritan.. As You Have Done Unto Me.. save the perishing” from God’s Son, and Christian morality arising from that about not withholding to do good when it lays in your power to do it. Every life is precious: lose not one victim.
Why? Because: it’s just what good people try and do. Humanity 101. Basic morality 1.0.
Operation Unified Assistance
So the men & women & aircraft & ships of the Lincoln carrier group & attached Airwing sprang into humanitarian action, called Operation Unified Assistance: food, water, medicine, rescue, whatever can be done, ASAP– time is of the essence with disasters. Around the world, donors gave and emergency teams were sent, to help everyone.
Except.. much of the Muslim world. Ordinary people in North America gave more than all the oil-rich nations of the Middle East, and they belatedly. Worse, the “They Had It Coming” notion of evil and suffering is Islam meant that to give to sufferers– i.e. sinners being punished by Allah– is giving aid to bad people.
Cruelty & Suspicion
Even worse, in radical Islamic enclaves like Aceh, suspicion of American motives meant they wanted the infidel Americans to go away, even before Operation Unified Assistance, or basic emergency rebuilding of utilities, bridges, and roads was in place. No matter if that attitude meant people needlessly starved or died or suffered: don’t want infidel crusader Christer cooties, and they must want something or they wouldn’t be helping. Plus, all those goodies and support should really be supporting the Jihad, too.
Again, the failure of Islamic theology to create or inspire a general humanitarianism– except under certain circumstances only for fellow Muslims– results from the problem of tribalist, conspiracist, and inward-looking radical Islam. While American Christians were trying to give freely, officially Muslim nations and local groups were suspicious and resistant– just because it was the Americans who had the power and opportunity to do good as and when needed.
Finally, And In Conclusion
The most common victims of backward Islamic theology and cold-hearted Muslim radicalism and inhumane stinginess? Muslims themselves. You know, cuz the crazy-war is most important. Mo’ said so– thus, this is his inhumanity passed down to others.
Some civilizations are simply better than others, in some respects and at certain times. If my Canucki region were hit by disaster, I’d look for the Americans to help, and not wait in vain for the “Glad Allah Beat You Up And Not Us” Saudi rescue-squads. ~
~ TEH BINKS HAS NOTED the costly new HBO fantasy-series now out, Game Of Thrones. In the genre of Tolkien or other such writers, this is American author George R. R. Martin’s bid for prime time blockbuster status.
But I’m not buying it.
I am going to try to see some of the TV version, but I’m not sure if I want to buy the book and clutter my mind with bad imitations of Tolkien; or worse, some goombah who is playing deity with a fantasy/ mystic story on the one hand, or the rehashed wars an backstabbery of English late medieval history on the other. That would be the often anachronistic and voyeuristic books/ TV adaptation of Pillars of the Earth, by the pompous UK Leftist Ken Follett.. a definite C+ effort, though the acting wasn’t too bad, given the material. I found the regurgitation of the first book in the sequel ‘World Without End’ was simply bad. Bad.
Been There, Geeked That?
Perhaps I’m prejudging George R. R. Martin, but I feel– as a once D&D nerd, wargamer, and fantasy book-reader– that I know this guy already. Clever but not wise, sceptical, uber-nerdly, fundamentally immature and inexperienced, absorbed in his sub-creations & a trivia-expert, but perhaps not truly humble enough to obey the muses, or interesting enough to spin an enduringly good and convincing story.. and hard on his characters.
Is his moral universe coherent, or decently pagan, or anti-Christian? I’m just not sure I want this nerd’s thoughts laying themselves down in my mind.
Does He Say So, Indeed?
“Beloved Fantasy Saga” says the cover? So trumpets the cover of one Martin book. Yes, we must to sell the books.
Whoa there, George, in the epic fantasy universe you’re up against Homer, the epic authors of Beowulf, the Finnish Kalevala, and the Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied; latterly J.R.R., E.R. Eddison, C.S. Lewis, Ursula K. Le Guin, George MacDonald, and a host of others. Only time will tell if you’re a high-flying nerd of the moment, or an artist for the ages.
After all, horrible and depraved people can still be good actors, and their characters better or nicer or more interesting than the person depicting them. Authors sub-create a universe, and depict adequately or inadequately what it is to be human, heroic, evil, and all the rest. In that sense, a Catholic or Christian mind sub-creates a recognizable and educative universe not simply by “I Say So”, but with a subtle and creative reflection of reality. By contrast, Phillip Pullman’s efforts are all about destroying, erasing, and mocking Christianity, the idea of truth, or the notion that fantasy writing should delight and form the imagination, by reflecting the mysteries of reality, good and evil, human nature and experience and all the rest. Anti-Narnia indeed.
Anyhow, I’m gonna try an episode or two of the TV adaptation.. but this ye olde fantasy reader is treading lightly, for here there be dragons.. or what’s worse, derivative tiresome puffed up geeks. ~
P.S. Up to episode 3 now. Predicatable HBO-type titillation (yawn).. some decent acting in spots.. story is (so far) ugly 13th century Anglo-French backstabbery, with a thinly-disguised dose of Scottish-type Pictish sorts. Winter is coming. Big short talent Peter Dinklage is doing an interesting turn as a malevolent puppeteer of events.
~ DEMOCRACY IS MESSY, not as predictable as some utopians might prefer it, and sometimes lets Teh Little Peoples interfere in masterplans. That’s why Teh interwebs are ever under fresh threat of ‘supervision’ from one group of managers or another. The web is a dreadful hiccup in the management of information and the masses, dontcha know.
That’s why, I suppose, EUtopia has an unelected unrepresented something-or-other in Fuhrer Herman Achille Van Rompuy, creepy Belgian guy & first long term and full time President of the European Council. Supreme leader, minus the war of conquest. That’s progress for ya.
I blame the self-defeating French for all this EUtopian dreams of one leader, one hive of minions, one perfect kingdom. Rousseau & Voltaire led to Robespierre & the chop; thence to Napoleon, speech-codes, and secret police minding everybody’s business.
As Paul Johnson details in The Birth of the Modern: World Society 1815-1830, the radical cause attempted to push Britain into revolution, executions and neo-Napoleonic misery.. but it didn’t work, partly because of the flexibility of English democracy, economic development (no hungry masses marching for bread), and a general lack of support for the revolting.
Mess It The Hell Up!
That didn’t stop radical poets like Byron and Shelley & Keats from– in the terms of their day– trying to get the masses to “break on through to the other side”, because.. well, — um, er.. all would be better forever and ever, promise, guaranteed. You know, kinda like a droopy Jack Layton, plus rock-star literary appeal. Radicals would chop down the tree at the root.. ‘radix’ being the Latin for root.
Thing is, even Byron & Company might have noticed that paradise did NOT in fact break out 30 years before, in France. Like Communist apologists a century and more later, the early radicals knew all about looking the other way, inverting history, and lying to prove their point. You know– the facts weren’t exactly ‘factual’, but they should have been, and still prove the point that the existing order must be wrecked, and all counter-revolutionary deadwood bumped off.
We cannot not notice two centuries on (unless we are true-bleever leftoids) that the promised goods are a load of codswallop and toxic manure. The French Revolution; the radical German culturo-military regime of the Kaiser; the Russian revolt; on to China, Hitler, Eastern Europe and the Third world. Blood, death, enslavement, improving everything worser.
New & Improved
We might suppose we’ve learnt better, but Utopianism is still much with us: big state welfarocracy & Eutopia & speech-codes and the death-grip of political correctness on our institutions of government, church, and education. There’s no howling mob or guillotines or firing-squads, just the slow stifling death of soul and hope and all that went before to the slow inexorable acids of institutional radicalism.
That’s why the true task of conservativism is to manage change slowly, always looking back, never wrecking or ruining the good through boredom or snobbery or impatience. There is a real and persistent human nature; there is truth and goodness and beauty; there is good and evil– in us, and the world. There is a God, and his will in ordering things toward the good.
Gettin’ Their Freak On
What’s also ‘coincidental’ about so many of these radical sorts is the hanky-panky they are usually espousing, along with the rest of their radical relativism: whether the marital hijinks of the radical English poets, the creepy cousin-love of Hitler; the endless harems of Emperor Mao, or the whilst-married rub & tug of Canada’s incoming leader of the official opposition. You see, they have a high and lonely destiny, a greater morality than lesser mortals– whether it comes to advocating wreckifickation of their society, prison or death to their opposition, or a little of the old rumpy-bumpy.
I call BS on all of it. Read Paul Johnson.. he’s got the goods. ~
~ TINY TALENT AL PACINO is a certifiable Shakespeare-nut. Witness his 1996 Looking for Richard (a “deeply-felt rumination on Shakespeare’s significance and relevance to the modern world through interviews and an in-depth analysis of “Richard III.”), and his powerful performance as Shylock in the 2004 movie A Merchant Of Venice. Plus, a stage version of that play with Pacino, via Shakespeare in the Park, and on Broadway. He says:
“In school we read Romeo and Juliette, I saw Marlon Brando in Julius Caesar. And all the great English actors. I talk in the movie with James Earl Jones about what it is like to be able to express yourself through Shakespeare. I enjoyed that.”
It’s a good thing, as long as it’s taught properly, and with insight into how the Bard speaks to all ages, especially one caught up in flickering screens and info overload. Chewing on great words and ideas, the great themes of life, plus an introduction to history, literature, and comedy, tragedy and drama? Priceless.
Recently, Binkling Spawn 2.0 had to do a short memorization passage. “There was a young man from Nantucket…” seemed wrong somehow, so I looked up a bit of Shaky Bill’s Julius Caesar. Hence part of a speech from Anthony, (Scene 3, Act1):
A curse shall light upon the limbs of men;
Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
Shall cumber all the parts of Italy;
Blood and destruction shall be so in use
And dreadful objects so familiar
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quarter’d with the hands of war;
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds:
And Caesar’s spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice
Cry ‘Havoc’, and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.
Sounds pretty much like the last century, and the daily coverage in the news of many palces and events.
The only problem I had with the 2004 film was that Michael Radford’s screenplay cut short so many scenes and speeches– I’ll be looking forward to seeing a Beeb or Royal Shakespeare Company version, since while for some filmed Shakespeare may not bear long speeches, Kenneth Branagh and others have not seen fit to chop and slash quite so freely.
These days, you can watch bits of it (possibly the whole thing) on YouTube.
Keep on with Teh Shakespeare! ~
Herds Of Stephen Hoperites
“Human Rights Commissions as they are evolving are an attack on our fundamental freedoms and the basic existence of a democratic society … it is in fact totalitarianism.”
~ GERRY NICHOLS has stolen my thoughts: less than gruntled, I support the Tories, Harper & the Harperites rather IN SPITE of the PM’s past record on many many issues, not least the socon issues. This is his last chance with me & Teh She-Binks: now with the longed-for Federal majority, if he doesn’t begin to pay back his (c)onservative, socon, and religious voters, then a resurgent blue Liberal party stands a real chance.. or a Canucki Tea Party.. or Western Separatism.
Power may corrupt, but it also can blind, enthrall, and make stupid. Harperism is not especially conservative as such.. more like olde-time reasonable Canadian Liberal with a gloss of Blue colour, and un-blue Keynesian economics. The previous over-emphasis on 90’s-style fiscal conservatism, tax-cuts, and big government? Some of that is OK, but not the be-all or end-all.
Unglorious & UnFree
Equally, Stephen Harper’s reluctance to officially review & push back on threats to Canadian free speech & the free press & free internet are very problematic– and that includes the Federal Human Right Kangaroos, the debacle at Caledonia, and his support of democracy-failing Julian Fantino. The upcoming web-muzzling C-51? Fail. Gun registry roll-back? Fail! Protected freedoms for Canuckistan? Fail.
Whether such matters are about not feeding the opposition, egg-walking for the electorate, micro-management and stubborn pride.. dunno. What he does in the next 4-5 years will shape and reshape Canada for a generation.. or fade into the fail-zone of recent Canadian politicos.
Earn This, Stephen
[Miller weakly mutters something]
Private Ryan: [leans in closer] What, sir?
Captain Miller: James, earn this…earn it.
This voter and political observer sense in his gut that this vote is a bit like the scene in Saving Private Ryan where the dying Captain Miller (played by Tom Hanks) tells said Private “Earn this.” All the suffering, the many deaths of other men, all to save him? Don’t be a eff-up, a goof-off, a life-waster: you were saved at a high price.
Don’t blow it, Mr. Prime Minister. More than your soul hangs in the balance: govern with integrity, because your voters are sick of your lying to them and to yourself: there’s no blind faith left towards your antics or slithers any more. ~
~ THE CHATTERING CLASSES and Hollywood powers do love to mock and bash faithful folks. The world hated Christ, and he promised it would hate his faithful followers, The Living Ones, born anew by water and the Holy Spirit and the divine zoë (Gk.)– eternal life, as distinct from biological life, or bios— an imparted zoe-Life which cannot be defeated by sin, or death, or hell.
Where the brave movies telling the story of honour killing in America? Oh.. a Muslim girl in love with life, and perhaps a Christian boy– then run over and slain by her immigrant feather in the name of family honour and Islamic values. Or the harsh and abortive spirit of eugenicist Left, Margaret Sanger and her bloody consequences, Planned Parenthood and horrid dumpsters o’erflowing with butchered young innocent life? But no.. cranky jealous Christian killer-guy.. yup, that’s the real story of life in 2011.
When the dehumanizing and reviling starts– then Christian, look to yourself and family, and abide in hope, for Christ has overcome the world. Don’t hide in self-pity or recrimination: bless those who misuse and curse you. Redeem the world. Bold up– for lukewarm and wobbly and compromising will betray us all in the time of trial and temptation. ~
~ AT THE RISK of sounding like an utter tench-peasant & geezer, I gotta say I am disliking the iPod-Phone-Texting culture which has consumed so many people– especially the young. The occasionally funny UK humour site The Daily Mash puts it – Shiny Thing Make It All Better!
You at the mall? Text your friend about it, moment by moment. Out for a walk? Phone someone, or else have your chosen music or audiobook on so loud you can’t notice whether or not the birds are singing, your neighbour is calling out a hello, or a car is rushing towards you as you cross the street.
The Biggest Conspiracy
There is a conspiracy against silence in the busy, restless West. Silence used to be called peace & quiet; a walk was a time to think and maybe pray; to chat with an actual friend walking beside you, like the old Greek philosophers of the Aristotelian school, the peripatetics.
You don’t really know who you are until you’re alone, with no shiny thing, no glowing box, no demanding inbox or text-messages. It all started with the telephone: insistence replaces importance. Thou shalt answer the ringing thing. We all do it: “just in case”.. cuz you know, we might miss Henry from New Delhi trying to get us to switch to a new low interest rate. When cut off from such tech?
Just For 24 Hours
The World Unplugged– “Students talked about how scary it was, how addicted they were,” said Susan Moeller, the professor of media who led the project. “They expected the frustration. But they didn’t expect to have the psychological effects, to be lonely, to be panicked, the anxiety, literally heart palpitations.”
The iPotextphoneBerry becomes another barrier against silence, against knowing ourselves and being able to stand ourselves with no distractions; another prophylactic against the demands of neighbourly exstance and love, of the call to redeem the time; indeed and ultimately, a cocoon against any still small voice from God or conscience breaking in and disturbing our self-manufactured techno-narcolepsy.
Don’t get me wrong– I come from a long line of techno-gadgeteers, geeks and nerd-spazzers, and have been so myself. I sometimes wonder if some far-ancient ancestor of my family got his inner geek rejoicing when someone figured out the new high-tech gift of pitch as the best way to keep torches burning in wind & rain. “Ungh! What they think of next?.. Og, pass iTorch 1.0, want to try new features again.” That’s a long way from the following.
“I didn’t use my cell phone all night. It was a difficult day… a horrible day,” said a student from Chile. “After this, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT MEDIA! I need my social webs, my cell phone, my Mac, my mp3 always!”
At what price shiny thing? No, not the actual mass-squanderage of iDollars for the latest gadget or reiteration thereof, but the integration of same into our souls and selves and time and waking and sleeping and thinking and relating and spiritual lives.. and lack of those same things. Anything but quiet & pondering? That inner dialogue of the self with self which is thought & conscience and the voice of the soul to God and God to the soul? No, stay addicted to shiny thing.. did we mention we’ve got 400 new shiny thing apps just today?
Seeing cool stuff on Star Trek and then actually having the equivalent in the real world (that’s partly where cell-phones came from) misses the point that those were props, and real communicators are very addicting, destructive of human life and relationships in the real world, and become a force for societal change. Technology begins to shape us, change our world, and make the deeper and quieter things of thought, appreciation, observation, inward digestion and contentment more rare, and harder to develop, or maintain.
Me, Myself, & I
I remember the literal terror and puzzlement of going on my first silent retreat, at a monastery. I was a TV-kid, and a voracious reader– but to be silent for 48-plus hours was a new experience, in which I found my sins and sorrows crying out, once I couldn’t ignore them. I met myself that weekend, which was a tremendous gift and surprise. From the bored/ puzzled look on some of the faces of the younger set at the Royal Wedding, being forced for 2 hours tech-fast, and to look at world-class architecture, listen to wonderful music, a good sermon, classic hymns, and the Biblically-formed prose of the 1662 Book Of Common Prayer was a bit much for their web-connected brains.
That’s what makes Google such a bad thing, too– by seeing to become the universal gateway to online media & computing, they are placing themselves as the new masters of the mind, of what is & is not news, their view of politics, world events, religion, and technology. Google wants to eat your brain.
Shiny thing NOT make it all better. Shiny thing– when not a sometimes tool or amusement– become baby-blanket, stupid-making shiny master, mental and visual and audio bubble-gum, not real food. ~

Ideological backstories (like Freidan’s alleged tortured housewife-drudgery) were always just BS meant to conceal Marxist wreckery– since the first goal of all serious Commies is to separate people from family, and feminism is partly about wrecking marriage, separating men and women, and disconnecting sex from marriage and babies. ‘The Muslim world is certainly “getting to Denmark”. It’s also getting to the Netherlands, to Austria, to France, and beyond. In Scandinavia and in other advanced western societies, the state grows ever bolder in constraining freedom of expression and other core western liberties. In the interests of enforcing the state religion of a hollow and delusional “multiculturalism”, basic tenets of Fukuyama’s “rule of law” – including due process, the truth as defence, and equality before the law – are tossed aside in the multiculti version of heresy trials. As recent decisions in Michigan suggest, America is not immune to this trend.’
“Canadians are going into the Easter weekend tomorrow with a few truths to consider. First and foremost, Stephen Harper will be the next prime minister. Second, if Michael Ignatieff cannot be counted on to stop Stephen Harper from forming a majority, left-leaning Canadians will look to the much more likeable and ideological Jack Layton to oppose Mr. Harper in the 41st parliament. Third, Canadians will consider a coalition government to be explicitly on the table as Layton may be in an increased position of strength to negotiate its outcome.”

Conservative students and groups often complain about being treated
inequitably on campus, or feeling like they are all alone in their
convictions. The Prince Arthur Herald, Canada’s only center-right national
student newspaper, aims to change that by giving conservative students a
voice and community that will respect their opinions and stand up for their
rights, along with the rights of all Canadians.
Started by a group of predominately McGill students, The PAH in less than
two months of operation has received tens of thousands of hits from across
Canada. As a result, the editors have decided that a nationally-read
newspaper deserves to be written by students from across the nation. As an
Ontario Desk Editor, I am recruiting students who are interested in writing
a regular 500 word column. Columns don’t just have to be about politics
(although they can be) as the Herald also addresses subjects ranging from
campus life to culture, finance, sports, health, law, and more.
Those who control the message, control the debate. Without a friendly
media presence that values excellence in communications while addressing the
hard issues of our day, conservative students will continue to struggle to
be heard and respected on campus.
This is a fantastic opportunity for conservative students to make their
voices heard, while gaining valuable experience working for a national
student newspaper. If you are interested in being part of this, please
contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or through Facebook.
“Essentially what they were investigating was something that was public knowledge and then inferred conclusions that these faith statements were stifling the academic atmosphere, without ever conducting an empirical review. They have reached a damaging conclusion that discredits our schools.”
