Like an artist, Mark Steyn depicts and delights, but never falls into the easy temptation of ranting. He reminds this reader of a bewigged character, (perhaps from the Nelsonian navy), saying of his opponents “I say, those beggars seem to be trying to kills us. What rotters. Shall we have at them?” The rollicking results always satisfy.

Polygamy; polygyny; incest; or– in the acceptable suburban fashion, serial monogamy via easy divorce. Monogamy is the target, and lots of people are shooting at it.

May we who believe fight this good fight for our day and time, and for the good of all; may those who are uncertain or disbelieve yet act as if they do, so we may do good together, and seek a better world than Utopia or HRC or the earthly-minded dare hope for or imagine. We may suffer and struggle, but the victory has been won: the very ground of reality is eternal victory won for us by God in Christ.
~ ON UGLY HYMNS.. I cordially hate virtually all cheerful modern happy-clappy church music. It’s been 45 years of this stuff, and whilst Boomers may still be addicted and amused by it, the culture moved on long ago. Looong, looooong ago. The promised influx of yoot and such never really happened– and now, I suspect such past stale-dated cotton-candy is keeping a lot of people away, and convinced that Christianity is brain-damaged, and a millimetre deep. It won’t do: and if made to do, it won’t do very well. It’s all a substitute for the complete range of thought and feeling and worship in older hymns, and in classical church music.
Happy clappy? Been there, done that, endured the Smiling Guitar People, and the same “new” hymn for the thousandth time. Gack.
I feel much the same about the endless string of utopianisms since the French Revolution. The body count.. the empty promises.. the follow-the-leader.. the stupid.. the injustice and fanaticism.. over and over, like a madness. Presently it’s ObaMania; Eutopia; UN 1-Worldism; Jihadistry; and whatever secret stuff we don’t know about. Tomorrow? New label and details, same dehumanizing utopianism.
What’s UtopiProgism replacing? The same thing goofy church muzak is: classical Christianity, and the civilization it created and sustained.
The modern alternative to the new life and transformation bursting from the broken tomb and shining from the risen Jesus Christ is not another religion, but the unfaith of a utopia, with Glorious Leader, the holy message, and the war on the infidels– or a watered-down version of the same, built of fragments of what went before. Barbara Hall and Nancy Pelosi and Tony Blair and Al Qaeda leaders all dream of a better world, just within reach if only their agenda can go uber alles enough.
The choice has been pretty clear for the last 100 years in particular, if anyone was still enamoured of revolution and heaven on earth. History keeps repeating itself because we have to put to death our hope for a heaven without God, and a salvation without death and rising to a new way. The Communists and Nazis at least were clear on the matter: after capturing schools, youth, the military & police, they knew the only serious remaining competition to their regimes and claims were serious Christians: witness the clergy and believers in prison in North Korea, and China; the 100 000 slain clergy of the Soviet Era; the special clergy-concentration camp; and don’t forget the carefully planned Second Hitlerite ‘Final Solution’, for the churches, clergy, and uppity parishioners in the new German Empire.
The history of the modern world– even the HRC wars– are all about the longing for utopia versus the true, higher, and abiding kingdom that transforms the earth. In that choice hands our civilizational and individual future. Or as Mark Shea puts it,
“God is the only thing that guarantees that we have any rights at all. It is only God, as revealed in Scripture, who is the source of our rights. If rights are merely a fiction granted by the state, or another way of saying “Whatever the strong will” then nobody, including gays, has any rights at all. A society steeped in the Christian tradition can hold the notion of inherent human rights to be self-evident. But no other. Because, empirically speaking, there is nothing whatsoever self-evident about equal rights — or about rights at all.
