~ I DEEPLY & TRULY HATE ugly architecture. In a recent video by Amazing Polly in which she discusses a range of topics, about 1/2 way through, she talks about the death of beauty and the kind of architecture inflicted on people by modernist architects. Watch her video first.
A building can inform, delight, ennoble, send a message about goodness, beauty, and truth. Even simply functional buildings can have a touch of whimsy, detail, and design that makes if more than functional. Deliberately ugly, functionalist, offensive modern architecture is meant to desolate the eye, the heart, the mind, and keep us trapped in the here and now, oppressed and oppressing, surrounded by the excretions of our betters.
Anyhow, here’s my comment, following her statement that Canada never had a period of attractive architecture:
I dare to disagree with you, Amazing Polly. Canada had a period of beautiful buildings, circa 1800-1900+. The work of Maritimer William Critchlow Harris, the Ottawa Parliament builders, the Italianate homes , and many of our older pre-20th century church buildings. In some places (here and there in Toronto, more so in smaller & midsized communities) this heritage of lovely banks, public buildings, homes, and churches still exists, though some need TLC & renovation back to their more original design.
Sadly, as you say, brutalist & alien-invasion clever architecture has ruined many bigger communities & downtown cores, and too many architects still seem concerned with making a statement than following any line of truth, beauty & goodness, or even blending their building with the surroundings.
Here in my little town, the local RCMP have moved from a small and not unattractive brick building to a shiny metal, steel, and ominous structure, which is a statement of surveillance and domination, which doesn’t fit the town or setting, and was obviously designed by somebody with skill but little talent.
~ YES, I CAN BE longwinded in these things, so today, a short one.
A sad realization I’ve had over the past few weeks– Oleg Atbashian (The People’s Cube) was a former Soviet propagandist, he’s also an author, essayist, satirist, and graphic artist. He came to America for freedom.
Like many former Soviet dissidents come to the West, his reception was mixed– now, he’s a positive threat to the new Sovietization of the West. The same happened to Jamie Glazov’s parents, at Marxist-deluded Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, Canada. Don’t reveal the ugly truth of the Worker’s Utopia!
Now, under the politically correct, the corrupt establishment, politicized academia & media, we are going Soviet. Soft Soviet, with a smug smile and an iron fist. This devolution has been underway for almost a century, under many guises, and stages. Coercion of thought and behaviour is the ultimate goal.
Symptoms, just on Campus? Tribunals, trial by media & mob, the politics of personal destruction, radicalization of politics, thought-police, a quiet terror keeping people quiet & scared. Wrong-thinkers versus the Party Truth. Spying & tattling & surveillance. All must be sacrificed for the utopia.
We have become a Soviet-style prison, just waiting for the final bars & locks to be fitted. Ironic, no? Tragic, too.
“In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is…in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”
A Gift To Us All
And patiently, year by year, Oleg & his amazingly insightful website has been warning us of the risks ahead, from his life under the Soviet nightmare. We should all be grateful, and aware of his work.
Go read his blog. Read his book “Shakedown Socialism“. Buy his merch. I’m not saying he’s always right in everything said & done and thought– but that his angle is unique, deeply insightful, and hard-won by bitter experience.
Heed his warnings. Tragically, he’s turned out to be right, so far.
Congratulations on serving as Canada’s new Governor General, and representing the Queen to Canada, and Canadians to the Queen. It is an historic and storied role. Representing all Canadians is a wonderful opportunity.
Thank you for speaking out for science recently, at the 9th annual Canadian Science Policy Conference on Wednesday, November 1. Canada has long led the way in technology, innovation & invention, and in medical fields, amongst many others.
However, during your remarks it is reported that you said:
“”Can you believe that still today in learned society, in houses of government, unfortunately, we’re still debating and still questioning whether humans have a role in the Earth warming up or whether even the Earth is warming up, period,” she said.
“And we are still debating and still questioning whether life was a divine intervention or whether it was coming out of a natural process let alone, oh my goodness, a random process.
“And so many people — I’m sure you know many of them — still believe, want to believe, that maybe taking a sugar pill will cure cancer, if you will it!
“And every single one of the people here’s personalities can be determined by looking at planets coming in front of invented constellations.”.
Your Excellency– as I understand it, your role is to speak to and represent all Canadians– including those who need to use non-prescription supplements, those who believe that there is no contradiction between science and religion, those who are not convinced– on actual evidential bases that climate change as popularly represented is primarily anthropogenic– or whatever other beliefs are out there which you seem to have slighted in your comments.
The following distinguished people have believed there is a divine being: Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato. Einstein. Moses & Jesus. St. Thomas Aquinas. Galileo. Leonardo. Sir Isaac Newton. Nicholas Copernicus.
The following Noble Laureates in Science are also people who had some kind of agnostic or actual faith in God (mostly Jewish & Christian)–
My father was trained in the fields of computers, nuclear physics, general medicine, and the difficult specialty of pathology & medical examination. He served Canadian communities up and down the Annapolis Valley for two decades, as did his immigrant Scots father– also a Pathologist– did for 30 years prior. My father was also a Christian. He had no difficulty believing that God both created and was creating– through his created things and beings– all that is.
As a Canadian, I do not feel anyone in such a position as Governor General of Canada should be– or be seen to be– alienating or dividing our country, or possibly provoking and insulting Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jews, or those who follow aboriginal beliefs.
I hope this letter finds you well, enjoying your opportunities for the betterment of our Country, and richly blessed in all you do. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
Yours very sincerely,
Etc., etc., so on and so forth.
UPDATE– VICTORY! 😉
Dear Mr. Binks,
Thank you for sharing your views and suggestions with Governor General Julie Payette.

IT STILL SITS as the second highest grossing movie ever: James Cameron’s 1997 Titanic, by James Cameron. $2,186,772,302.00 and change. Not a great flick, but a good one. Personally, I’m just as impressed by the fact of James Cameron’s one-man submarine trip down 7 miles to the bottom of the Marianas Trench…
Our world is the Titanic: and what you think is going on in life or the life of the world depends very much on what part of the voyage you focus on. I explain.
For some, we’re on a journey in a mighty vessel to the new world, just over the horizon. Full speed ahead! What could possibly go wrong? Look.. all the best people are here, and agree with us! Moar caviar!
Not long after, the speeding unsinkable shears off countless cold-brittle rivets on an iceberg. The designers had not imagined such a thing, nor prepared for it. As the bow settles, water will keep moving backwards over the watertight bulkheads, until.. doom.
Me, I’m a “life is bow-settling” guy. Death– the water– is creeping up surely and unavoidably. Order is breaking down, people are scrambling for lifeboats, and while some are going full-panic or full-denial, others are trying to abide by their duty, and to help as much as possible, as the Great Ship Utopia begins to founder in earnest into the icy North Atlantic.
Utopia, Right Ahead!
For many modern day Utopians– this-worldly salvation true-believers– it is in human reach and wisdom to make heaven on earth. Human beings are basically good, and just need enough browbeating, herd-mentality, and extra rules, and we will make a perfect world out of our super-duper selves.
Bizarrely, the very hubris of the modernist movement that built the Titanic and infected politics, and has also infected the Catholic Church. The clueless notion that the 1960s Church would “Listen to the World”, that we needed no redemption just a little buffing, and all would progress together in a la-la-land journey of common purpose and happy thoughts.. the Denial-As-Faith it took place in an actual sinking-Titanic world.
Consider– at the same time as sin and sacrifice and salvation were being thrown overboard, and a mind-boggling naiveté about human goodness and perfectibility was put on the altar, let us remember that the 20th century was the century of blood; of genocides; of industrial slaughter, of two catastrophic world wars with hundreds of millions dead, injured, made refugee.. plus, with technology abroad to have a third and very final War.
Even as the faux-clever theologians and happy-thinking bishops were trying to remake the faith into something unChristian and unrecognizable, the ovens of Auschwitz were not 20 years cold; Soviet Gulags and Chinese death-camps were brimming over; that World War Three had nearly begun a couple years before over Cuba; that despite the rush of technology and Western prosperity, that fallen human nature had not actually changed, and that we needed the Cross of Christ and His risen life more than ever.
Even the ancient pagans knew better: “Those whom the gods would destroy” they warned “they first drive mad.” Denial is a sweet addiction: but reality is always best.
Living In Dreams
As if it were 1905, and a perfect world was just ahead, out went the old religion, the Latin, the rosaries, the relics, the art and architecture: come now the felt banners and camping songs, the puppets & clowns, the moralistic therapeutic deist sermons (with a dash of revolution), of a new and sinless humanity feeling its oats in experiment and innovation and… “Iceberg, right ahead!!”
Mortality? Still with us. Human failing, cruelty, blindness, and evil? Check. Our limitations, blindness, and failed good intentions? Yup. Hurting one another, deliberately and just because? Pretty much. Violence, false belief, unspeakable deeds, a foolish naivete? Mass murder? Warfare? Always & everywhere.
Only, for all these abiding and tragic realities of our bent human nature, progressive religion has no answers, having treated as flotsam and jetsam the faith of our fathers, the wisdom of 20 Christians centuries and 15 Hebrew centuries before that; the riches of Roman Law and Greek philosophy and theatre; and all the good things of Western Civilization. Yard sale.. we have shiny new plastic things!
So the next time some smirking collar tells you all is well, celebrate yourself, God is (only) love, and love is probably God, hug a warm puppy and be happy– realize he’s trying to sell you a berth on the sinking Titanic, has no answers, no salvation to pass on to you, and is not in touch with the Real, or Jesus, or God– nor the reality of life and death and sin.
There’s more wisdom and human feeling and recognition of sin in the following Scouting campfire song than in a modernist post-Christian hymn or sermon.
The Titanic (Husbands And Wives) Camp Song
Oh they built the ship Titanic
To sail the ocean blue
And they thought they had a ship
That the water would never go through;
But the Lord’s Almighty hand
Said that ship would never land,
It was sad when that great ship went down.
Chorus: It was sad. It was sad. It was sad when the great ship went down. (to the bottom of the…) Husbands and wives, Little children lost their lives It was sad when the great ship went down.)
They were off from England
And not very far from shore
When the rich refused
To associate with the poor
So they sent them down below
Where they’d be the first to go
It was sad when that great ship went down.
The boat was about to sink,
And the sides about to burst,
When the captain shouted, “All
Women and children first!”
Oh, the captain tried to wire,
But the wires was on fire,
It was sad when the great ship went down.
Oh, they swung the lifeboats out
O’er the deep and ragin’ sea,
When the band struck up with,
“Nearer My God to Thee.”
Little children wept and cried,
As the waves swept o’er the side,
It was sad when the great ship went down.
THERE’S A world-wide conspiracy against silence, quiet, calm, and it’s coming at us from all directions at once. For those of us who don’t do life at volume-setting 11, it’s destructive, distracting, confusing, and enslaving. All this noise noise noise noise!
Several times in the past few months I’ve waved or called out a greeting to a neighbour on the street– nope: glued to the phone, the iPod, the distractor. It got me thinking.
What To Do?
Kenny Chesney is right that our modern West is all about noise, propaganda, selling things, babble, infotainment, endless electronic demands, devices which gobble our time, our days, our hours of rest. The question, after awakening to the racket and noise, is to ask “What else is there, instead?”
Everything else ever anywhere. The all-precious electronics? Turn them off.
Leave it home. Silence the alerts. You don’t actually need to answer that e-mail or text or to see the funny new kitten video. Tell people when you’d like them to call on the phone, instead of jumping for every call like it’s the police or the lottery.
Unplug. Just go for a walk– you, God, the birds, the breeze, the bugs, the sunshine on the grass.. no disconnecting or dehumanizing smartphone or iPod or shiny thing. Take a nap. Call a friend. Give an ear to someone who could use a good listener. Real things are best: friendship, society, leaving things and people better than you found them.
Make more room in your life for quiet. Read before bed, instead of surfing or chatting or sharing that one last trivial bit of forgettable fluff.
Enquieten your soul, so you can really begin to hear and listen to yourself, and nature, and for the voice of the Lord.. that still small voice which is paved over by the avalanche of modern noise, that needy neighbour or family member or stranger who vanishes behind the distractions.
Not So Easy?
Like any overpowering addiction, it may be painful and take some time to wean yourself away from constant technophilia and hollow ‘connectedness’. Then, try to help your kids, family, friends, co-workers. Shhhh. Listen.
Wrecking balls, downtown construction Bottles breaking, jukebox buzzing Cardboard sign says “The Lord is Coming” Tick, tick, tock Rumors turn the mills back home Parking lot kids with the speakers blown We didn’t turn it on but we can’t turn it off, off, off Sometimes I wonder how did we get here Seems like all we ever hear is noise
Yeah we scream, yeah we shout ’til we don’t have a voice In the streets, in the crowds, it ain’t nothing but noise Drowning out all the dreams of this Tennessee boy Just tryna be heard over all this noise
24 hour television, get so loud that no one listens Sex and money and politicians talk, talk, talk But there really ain’t no conversation Ain’t nothing left to the imagination Trapped in our phones and we can’t make it stop, stop this noise
Yeah we scream, yeah we shout ’til we don’t have a voice In the streets, in the crowds, it ain’t nothing but noise Drowning out all the dreams of this Tennessee boy Just tryna be heard in all this noise
Every room, every house, every shade of noise All the floors, all the walls, they all shake with noise We can’t sleep, we can’t think, can’t escape the noise We can’t take the noise, so we just make noise
Yeah we scream, yeah we shout ’til we don’t have a voice In the streets, in the crowds, it ain’t nothing but noise Drowning out all the dreams of this Tennessee boy Just tryna be heard in all this noise
All this noise Can’t take the noise Can’t take the noise Can’t stand the noise Can’t take the noise
“GNOTHI SEAUTON!” (Greek: γνῶθι σεαυτόν), said the ancient Greeks (we’re not sure which one, exactly)– Know Thyself! To this general idea, Socrates added: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”
That is, true wisdom (true authenticity with self, and others, and ultimately, God & reality), requires time, maturity, and effort– and a mirror. Some introspection. Some self-knowledge of strengths and weaknesses, fixable and unfixable, light & shadows, good and evil– OF YOURSELF. FIRST. With humility, and good humour.
Believe it or not, things like that Greek saying used to be taught on undiversity campuses. The Western way of knowing, of deliberation, moral action, of self-criticism and criticism of a society, of beauty, truth, goodness and right behaviour. Not so much in some sectors of the 21st Century modern college, though.
OK, so 2016– whither ‘Know Thyself’? The examined life? AWOL. Tantrums? Awesome!!
For many current and recent miseducatees, their radicalized professors fill them up with gross lies and half-truths and disproven faerie-tales and propaganda, get them all wound up and passionate, and release them like flying monkeys to accuse, judge, attack, grief, and mock– and even physically assault— The Evil Other. Look outwards! Look over there! No mirrors needed! Smite!
For unreflective SJWism, all that is imperfect & evil is externalized: know thyself know the enemy! Blame & shame! Attack the ignorants! Down with the evil & wrong-thinks! Juden Raus! Credere, obbedire, combattere! Smash the four olds! (破四旧). No think, just hate.
Know Thyself, Dude
Put down the bong, the feminist sociology textbook, and your smart-clickety– and grab a mirror, dear rads. Got mirror yet?
Dear SJWs, Campus radicals, progressives– you are the violent and dangerous ones. You are the assaulters, the silencers, the haters, the threateners, the fraud-artists, the no-platformers, the fanatics, the screamers, the interruptors. The bullies who ignore the right of all to have a say.
Your ignorance-fueled moral fervor does not make you actual heroes– it’s turning you into 1930s-style Leftist/ Socialist thugs. The fact that you may have nose-rings and tie-dye clothes and purple hair is utterly superficial– you are the Black, Brown, Green shirted barbarians you are claiming to warn everybody else about. You.
A Word To Students
Your radical profs are using, abusing, misusing, and cheating you. ‘Friendly’ and ‘cool’? Whatevs. You are expendable tools in their master-plan utopian games.
Truth– They are only teaching you 1/10th of 1% of the intellectual, philosophical, artistic, literary, and other facets of knowledge which are rightly your inheritance. What dribs and drabs of truth they ration out? All bent and twisted through circus-clown mirrors of radical distortion.
Moreover, these con-artists and their costly scam is stealing the formative years of your life, rewarding you with fools gold for your effort and money, and not preparing you for life, heaven & hell, work, adulthood & parenthood & citizenship.. nada.
How about… fact & truth based learning? The books your profs forbid? Reading? Thinking & debate? Religion & faith? Uniting the passion of youth with the wisdom of the West? Unstoppable! World-changing!!
A Word To The Grown-Ups
Parents, before you send your kid to college, find out what college will give you in return on your investment of life in the kid, and your investment of time and money for a college. You want a smart, educated, work-ready, well-read life-long learner and adult, not a lazy stoned propaganda-spewing basement commie being bitter on social media for the next 10 years.
Parents and prospective students– Does your proposed place of study have an active Women’s Centre? Safe spaces? Gender Studies Program? Black Lives Matters? Lots of radical campus groups? RED ALERT! No world-class or national-class scholars (or scholar-authors), or well-spoken of programs in real studies areas? RED ALERT! Learn the warning signs of SJW-brain-cancer growth places, and avoid them, as you would steer clear of live cancer soup, or a Nazi-decorated university setting.
Shut the radical ‘departments’ down, realize that pandering to the Radical Leftards will crush your school as word gets out, and parents wake up. Do what the awesome OSU leadership did— they told cry-bullies “No, you can’t trespass and harass our staff. Get out or get arrested and get completely off campus.” A tiny start.
SO I’M LEARNING (if slowly) that there’s absolutely nobody more smarter than an intertube atheist. Nobody, ever, anywheres.
In Christian circles, there’s such a thing as “preaching to the choir”. In web-infidel circles, the comment sections everywhere are a veritable Echo Chamber of very smug, self-satisfied clevers who have read Same Harris, watched Bill Nye and read some Hitchins and the infamous Dawkins, and don’t you dare try and take them on, lowly fool! Christers and other pathetic defenders of mindless superstition, beware!
Mind you, most of these ‘experts’ are mostly not deeply educated on anything except ‘Atheism/ Agnosticism’, and have no scope of history, philosophy, Biblical knowledge, or interpretation larger than a few books, and several dozen YouTube videos. It’s a puddle, not a lake– let alone an ocean’s depth of true wisdom and education and insight.
On The Intertoobs
This is sad-making, for Binks. As I noted a few posts ago, I like the YouTube channels of self-proclaimed atheists like Sargon Of Akkad— to which I’d add HoneyBadgerRadio, Thunderf00t, Karen Straughan, Vernaculis, Woolly Bumblebee, ShoeOnHead, johntheother, Feminism LOL, and others.
But there’s a dirty secret about most of these ‘open-minded’ characters which I’ll now reveal– despite the fact these cultural libertarian guys & gals are all great in their own ways for smiting the feminist, SJW, and Cry-Bully tribes (their alienated fellow Leftists), they are still very tribal themselves, and generally won’t engage in actual discussion– however friendly & reasonable– with religious believers.. especially the smart and friendly ones with an education.
Nothing. Nada. Silence. Can’t be having none of that. I’ve tried.
I mean, We All Know™ that all the Christians are all American-style fundamentalist Westboro Baptist bigotted science-hating anti-intellectual flat-earthing creationists, right? Morons. Nitwits. Stupids, with a retarded and childish set of beliefs, right? Derpy derp derp.
Enter YouTube Atheist Christer-basher CyaLatte (an Aussie), as a typical example of the tiresomely godless folks I’ve run into online almost constantly (think: very vocal ex-smoker). CyaLatte’s been in a sniping-war in the YouTube comments with myself on this video, together with some other addled glutton for punishment named Jeff Rosenbury.
How do we tell which god is God? Well you might look at His creation and make some deductions using — science perhaps?Tolerance is not a scientific value. Science allows no forgiveness. There is no excuse for a wrong answer. Science does not place value on human life. Therefore the logical conclusion is to kill everyone who is wrong. (i.e. doesn’t agree with you, or perhaps has a low IQ, or whatever other criteria you scientifically conclude.)
Fortunately the weight of scientific evidence currently favors some sort of godlike being. (This has varied through scientific discoveries, so perhaps humans aren’t always right?) The odds of the physical constants of the universe being in the narrow range to support life randomly (even using some sort of evolutionary, “we’re here” algorithm) are astronomically in favor of intelligent design. (Odds aren’t proof of course, but they are a good way to bet.)
Further the odds that the universe is so simple that humans are the ultimate in complex intelligence are slim. It’s just hubris to think we’re the smartest thing out there.
So presuming God exists, what does He want from us, and should we give it to Him? Is tolerance something nice?
If He is in contact, presumably He wants us to follow that religion thing. But perhaps not.
“How do we tell which god is God? Well you might look at His creation and make some deductions using — science perhaps?”
Mate, that literately explains nothing. The “look around you” argument is null and void. It’s stupid, and you’re stupid for using it. Looking around, that’s what you chose to open with? Honestly this is so ridiculous I spat out my food in laughter when I read it.
If I was the most generous moron in the world and granted there must be a god by simply looking at the creation, that still doesn’t differentiate the God itself. What evidence do you have that it was (what I am assuming you believe in, correct me if I’m wrong) the Judaeo-Christian God? It could have been Odin, Zeus, Allah, or Vishnu, there is no evidence to say which on it is, and that is all assuming that looking around is enough to prove anything, which it isn’t by any standard of logic and reason.
“Tolerance is not a scientific value. Science allows no forgiveness.”
Science is not an conscious entity, so obviously not. And since when are Gods tolerant, the Judaeo-Christian god especially? One minute he’s laying down the law saying “thou shall not murder”, and a chapter later he orders genocide. That is not tolerance, that is hypocrisy. In regards to forgiveness, why do you need forgiveness? Have you raped someone? Have you murdered someone? If you have you don’t deserve forgiveness and any god that forgives rape or murder doesn’t deserve worship.
“Science does not place value on human life.”
Maybe because human life ISN’T special. Have you not considered that? Are you wrapped up so much in your own ego that you think that humans are the most important thing in the Universe? If anything humans have done more harm than good. All life is just bunch of carbon, water and a series of chemical reactions. You know what’s more important than humans? Stars, if not for them there wouldn’t have been carbon in the first place.
“Therefore the logical conclusion is to kill everyone who is wrong.”
No that’s not a logical conclusion, that’s a retarded conclusion.
(Odds aren’t proof of course, but they are a good way to bet.)”
There is zero scientific evidence that supports any sort of god, let alone a god invented my humans. Again, even if I’m moronically generous and assume there is a god there is no way to determine which is correct. I challenge you to find one, just one piece of evidence that has gone through the scientific process and given irrefutable proof that a god exists. And if you can manage to do that then do the same thing to prove that your god is the correct god. Until then you have no case.
“Further the odds that the universe is so simple that humans are the ultimate in complex intelligence are slim. It’s just hubris to think we’re the smartest thing out there.”
Odds are not proof of anything. Using them as an argument without any evidence to support your claim damages your own credibility further.
“So presuming God exists, what does He want from us, and should we give it to Him? Is tolerance something nice?”
You’re so stupid I don’t know why I bother.
“If He is in contact, presumably He wants us to follow that religion thing. But perhaps not.
Give it some thought.”
I can think about it all I like, and unless I suffer a massive brain injury tomorrow, or until irrefutable proof is given and passes all scientific standards
It must be lovely to be able to call other people ‘stupid’, that their beliefs & conclusions are ‘retarded’ and childish’; to mock and dismiss most people ever, including a lot of scientists and philosophers and great people.
Of course, I’m not using the following names to ‘prove’ that God or divinity exists, just to line up the people you theoretically dismiss as stupid, retarded, and childish for their belief in God/ a divine being.
Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato. Einstein. Moses & Jesus. St. Thomas Aquinas. Galileo. Leonardo. Sir Isaac Newton. Nicholas Copernicus.
The following Noble Laureates in Science are also for your list of stupid people who had some kind of agnostic or actual faith in God (mostly Jewish & Christian)–
So, CyaLatte– I guess along with that noted clueless doofus Jeff Rosenbury , I’ll more than happily stand on the side of the ancient pagan, Jewish, and Christian physicists, geneticists, mathematicians, philosophers, astronomers, inventors, botanists, architects, logicians, meteorologists, physicians, co-founders of the scientific method, chemists, minerologists, cartographers, mathematical physicists, and the rest of the ragbag of losers, retards, know-nothings, and stupids who don’t fit your remarkably narrow categories.
Seriously, CyaLatte– actual education is more than reading and regurgitating online the notions of the “New Atheists”, some few of whom as ‘noted scientists’ (Sam Harris? Nye? Dawkins?) are very dim lights indeed, compared to the full sweep of history, thought, and famous folks listed above.
Again, I’m not arguing from authority to prove or disprove anything– I’m just listing names which don’t fit your, well, dogmatic anti-religious bigotry. Reality is always a little more complicated and unsettling than we thought.
But, I’m just a stupid, with ‘retarded’ and childish’ beliefs.. just like all the people listed above.
A very interesting article– I used to view Molyneux vids, until that whole bald-faced lying about his wife’s professional troubles thing a while back. Never heard of the new age guru-ette woman before, but have known of similar people & groups in the past. As a convert Christian, this all looks like (a) any messiah but the Real One, and (b) any ‘healing’ of our broken selves except the Eternal One.
Some atheist will then chime in with their faith-statement and say “But ALL religions are false!” but duck and dodge when it comes to examining the logical and evidential status of scientific materialism/ empiricism as a sufficient analysis of all things human and true and good. Of course, longing for a messiah doesn’t mean that there ever was or will be one, or that there is any actual healing for the brokenness, finity, imperfection, and infinite longings of human beings. That should be obvious.
As the Greek philosophers like Aristotle argued [Nicomachean Ethics], such desire may never be satisfied, but at least it indicates that our end (Gk. ‘telos’ =destiny, true fulfillment, goal, final end, completion) lies not in ourselves or any other finite thing, knowledge, or state of being. That’s why Aristotle ends up saying our human goal is to imitate God, the prime mover and the telos of all things, including human beings.
So– misled & misleading people like Swan, or Molyneux, or the New Atheists raise more questions for me than simply “why are they wrong or right?’, but also ‘how are they pointing to the truth, however imperfectly?’– this versus ‘Truth is known only in the empirical’, or ‘See how foolish and irrational these believers in messiahs and salvation are?”
You seem fair-minded, insightful, and reasonable in your approach. Please surprise me by reading and responding to my comment, the latter never happening on other atheist-tribe sites (Sargon, Thunderf00t, Vernaculis, etc.), even when I’m just elaborating on their point, or praising what they said.
