Show me the amusements of a culture, and I’ll show you it’s heart. So at the heart of ancient Rome was the Circus Maximus, and later the Flavian Amphitheatre ( the Colosseum), and the life and death battles there between man and animal, law and lawbreaker, man and man, Rome and the barbarians. It was all about the blood, and the judgement of the spectators: were they amused? Who deserved life and who deserved death? So via the public spectacles, the heart of that civilization was revealed.
What about our civilization? our amusements, judgements, and mortal battles?

~ THE BINKS DOESN’T PRETEND to expertise in politics or economics, but watching the whole American bailout thing, it feels like we’re only the surface of things.. or, a blurry funhouse mirror– at a distance– version of the actual facts.
After deeper reading, I think it’s an American economic coup d’etat underway, with trillions of dollars flying about, countless players involved, any number of versions ‘what’s really going on’ in the media, yet nobody in obvious control.
To be fair to Obama (!), he’s a puppet or hoax or salesman in the midst of his and other people’s machinations. Soros, Wall Street, the internationalists seeking to weaken the United States and create a more centralized Canada-style economy, which can be more closely controlled. There’s a long line of possible usual suspects.
And there’s the rub– in the flurry of news and opinion and crisis and spending, it’s possible to make both something and nothing of the mess. Is there a pattern? What’s the rest of the story? Is it bumbling and schemes and opportunism all together? With so much money flying around, it’s hard to see anything in the storm of zeroes.

~ PROGRESSIVES IMAGINE they can make people good, and that whatever they come up with, will take effect in the world without negative consequences, or a fallen human nature. As soon as I heard about the whole ‘over the counter chemical death pill thing, I thought of how men might abuse such things against wives, girlfriends, and even hook-ups (sneak a few into a drink, and there you are!.. or as some blog-wag put it: “Do her. Dose her. Ditch her.”). Then there’s the violation of pharmacist’s consciences. Let’s not forget BigPharm profits. Liberation, thy name is profit & convenience. And the progressive project of further turning men and women, and holy mystery, into nothing special, and possible or actual children into guilty intruders, to be judged and executed. ~
~ MARK STEYN SIGNED AND sent along to Castle Binks a copy of his new tome: Lights Out: Islam, free speech, and the twilight of the west. Huzzah! Eager reading ensues. It’s a powerful & sturdy 322 page revisit of the Elmasry-Free Speech wars, and a welcome collection of Mark’s best columns on a militant Islam versus a timid multiculti West, with our ‘eyes wide shut’ elites. He’s been and remains a warrior for all of us– buy & read and pass on this book to those who need to wake up before it’s too late.
Steyn’s open secret is his wit & turn of phrase, taking difficult or distressing matters and laying them out simply and engagingly. Like an artist, Mark Steyn depicts and delights, but never falls into the easy temptation of ranting. He reminds this reader of a bewigged character, (perhaps from the Nelsonian navy), saying of his opponents “I say, those beggars seem to be trying to kills us. What rotters. Shall we have at them?” The rollicking results always satisfy.
