“For to this end Christ died, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.” Romans 14. 8, 9.
~ FOR MODERN MEN & WOMEN, losing any sense of Death, Judgment, Heaven Or Hell leads inevitably & directly to man acting as a self-judging mini-god. That leads to warfare, supremacism, mercilessness, and getting away with things. Thence madness, violence, lies, and 2018.
As I’ve been reading about our Western cultural elites, I’m shocked/ not shocked by what the rich & powerful do behind the scenes. Many ordinary people likewise.
But what if there IS a right & wrong? Good & evil? What if we are accountable? Much of ordinary human life is all about distracting us, crushing silence and unsettling thoughts and questions.
What if all desires are known, and no secrets truly hidden? What if our old unrepented forgotten hidden sins have not just dissolved with time? What if the evil whispers shall be shouted from the rooftops in That Day?
What if God is as the Church has taught, and we are a few missed heartbeats & breaths from standing naked & defenceless before His perfect infinite goodness.. and love?
Pray this day for those who have gone before us through the veil, especially our friends & enemies, family & benefactors, and all those who died with nobody to pray for them and with them.
O FATHER of all, we pray to thee for those whom we love but see no longer. Grant them thy peace; and in thy loving wisdom and almighty power, work in them the good purpose of thy perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
REST eternal grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. Amen.
Navigating the Acadia website was like wandering through a picturesque maze, with not a single human being to be seen. In five minutes, I didn’t see the actual name of anyone, let alone Heather Hemming’s. I phoned the switchboard, hoping to speak to someone who could give me Ms Hemming’s email address: the hours are 8:30-4:30, Monday to Friday, so no luck. So, here I am at the general email address.
I also thought of contacting Acadia’s Office of Safety and Security as I believe that Professor Mehta’s safety and security are under siege—the topic of this message.
I have been an educator for 45 years. In that time, I have noticed a serious deterioration in both the maturity and behaviour of a critical mass of students. At the same time, I have noticed a standing down of the administrators, whose first line of defense now seems to be to appease the miscreant. This solves the problem of having to deal with an even more angry, entitled student and, often, that student’s belligerent parent(s). It’s nice for the three parties just mentioned—and hell for teachers, not to mention society at large.
I have twice been physically assaulted as well as suspended, minus due process, on the say-so of well known, student bullies. In all cases, the students were coddled and catered to: there were no negative consequences for them, but plenty for me. Who do you think felt really unsafe? As a colleague says, “Our schools are safe, all right—for the bullies.”
I attended excellent public schools in Toronto in the 50s and 60s: the adults were in charge. There were clear boundaries and not only were we safe, we felt safe! Academics were rigorous—a far cry from the curricula today—and we were held to account. We were not taught to be offended : the very idea of micro-aggressions and triggers didn’t enter our minds.
We were treated respectfully, which meant that we were held to high academic and behavioural standards. We could actually fail a grade. We could actually be suspended. Teaching our children that they have a right not to be offended is, in my opinion, a form of child abuse. This fiction renders young people very vulnerable to their own capricious and often tempestuous emotions. How is allowing vindictive and often misguided emotion to be the standard by which a university makes crucial decisions helpful to anyone?
Professor Mehta sounds like a man after my own heart. If the fairy tales being propagated at places like Acadia weren’t so outlandish, Professor Mehta’s ideas would seem to be just what they are: fairly mainstream. Why are his rights the only ones being disregarded? Why is his integrity considered expendable? Why is it OK to offend him?
Ms Hemmings, in attempting to censor, shame and bully Professor Mehta, Acadia seems willing to put itself in the same position as Wilfrid Laurier, which, deservedly, became a laughing stock. It seems that you’re unable to discern the gigantic double standard under which you appear to be operating. Acadia seems to have everything backwards: in order to enforce tolerance, you are intolerant. In order to appease the immature appetites of a group of coddled adult toddler students, it seems that Acadia is willing to sacrifice not only the integrity of a hard working, accountable academic, but his very livelihood. Shame on you.
How about if Acadia were to come to its senses and follow the example of the University of Chicago, re its expectations of its students? How about if Acadia were to actually treat its students not like spoiled brats, but like adults?
“Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own,” the letter said.
“The Upside Down is an alternate dimension existing in parallel to the human world. It contains the same locations and infrastructure as the human world, but it is much darker, colder and obscured by an omnipresent fog…. [a] dimension that is a dark reflection, or echo, of our world. It is a place of decay and death, a plane out of phase, a place of monsters. It is right next to you and you do not even see it.” … “Nope. No parallels under here.” (Hilary White)
~ BINKS IS just about to finish ‘Stranger Things‘ on Netflix, Season 1. Must say, I love it.. and it’s hard not to binge-watch it.
No major spoilers ensue below. Promise.
Like ‘The Matrix‘, the hit-show Stranger Things employs that familiar & human sense of displacement, weirdness, that there is an Unseen all around us which sometimes breaks in upon us in our ‘ordinary’ lives. That there is more going on than meets the eye.
In the popular Netflix series, which overflows with references to 80’s pop-culture, there is literally an evil copy parallel dimension called ‘The Upside Down‘, where people can be trapped, and eaten by a monster. The dimensional doorways can appear anywhere and everywhere: the wall of a house, a tree trunk, the basement of a top-secret government lab.
What both ‘The Matrix‘ and ‘Stranger Things‘ lack to make them universal is a spiritual universe above and inter-penetrating the visible ‘ordinary’ universe.. and a clear sense of God & His guiding providence. Sadly, religion plays almost no part in the show, or the lives of the characters.
What ‘Meant’ Means
By comparison, the writer J.R.R. Tolkien repeatedly mentions providence without explicating that it is of the Valar (archangels) and Eru (God). The wizard Gandalf’s own long mission in Middle Earth was a sending from the Blessed Land to fight evil, help the free peoples via suffering and pity, and– ultimately– to defeat Sauron, the dark successor to Morgoth (a fallen Valar, the Satan-figure).
In that Lord Of The Rings scene– which Peter Jackson moves from Frodo’s kitchen to the Mines Of Moria– we read:
Frodo: “I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.”
Gandalf: “So do all who live to see such times; but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.”
That ‘meant’ bears a world of significance. Consider.
‘Meant’ is God’s providence, in the world, in events, ‘coincidences’, and via people. The Bible proclaims: “All things work together for good to them that love God.” [Rom. 8:28] Note: NOT ‘all things will be pleasant, easy, and straightforward’.
Remember: Christians serve a Crucified and Risen King, who still bears His (now glorious) scars. No easy path there: take up your cross. Follow, die.
Living Our Double Sight
And there’s another sense of “the unseen dimension”, our own actual “Upside Down”, which tempers our anger and enlightens our struggles. As Saint Paul teaches the Christians of Ephesus, and us:
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” [Eph. 6:12]
Any battle with sin, darkness, heresy– in the church and the world, and in our own hearts, is a combination of many forces, many invisible, or acting through us or other people in a greater & darker pattern than the simply human (as bad as we can be).
Exorcists are still busy in 2018. Possessed people still exist– some in politics, and in the Church itself. Even some clergy may be thus.
The Disorientation Is Real
In the current pontificate of Francis, there is unprecedented darkness, division, dishonesty, confusion and discouragement afoot. Papal hyper-loyalists rally ’round the revolutionary throne, throwing accusations at critics and radical (deep-rooted) Catholics who demand the whole witness of the Church to be heard, respected, lived, taught.
Sometimes, it feels as if an UnChurch from some evil parallel dimension like ‘The Upside Down‘ has invaded our reality, and is seeking to proclaim itself as the real, true, and only thing to serve. There is a spiritual war afoot: each of us can play a double part, on earth as in heaven, for good or bad. The darkness is not simply the opposition themselves, nor we only the bright good ones– for humility and reality’s sake, we admit there are brighter and darker forces in conflict within what we see, and in each soul.
Holy loyalty and faithfulness and restraint are good: but we do not honour the Church or her current leadership via our blind obedience, nor forgetting Whom She really belongs to, and Whose Voice she is supposed to obey. His will is not simply to be identified with the novel dictates of people who seem bound to another message, an unKingdom, a utopia of exalted man making himself into a God, his desires and feelings the measure of all truth and goodness. OUR kingdom come, OUR will be done: and yet, even in this, a greater darkness can be felt, seeping through, pushing, ruining, distorting the Church, but also the fever dreams of utopia, too.
Some Christian Basics
That evil unholy being is not some exact counterpart to God, but a created and fallen Enemy, and likewise all the fallen angels and powers under his control. Alone, we cannot defeat such darkness, for we are but mortal and finite and compromised with darkness ourselves. From such, Christ came to deliver us.
Ancient Paganism sought to placate the dark powers; to deflect the ill will of spirits, gods, sprites, and malicious beings of every sort. Animal and human sacrifice was the trading of precious life for benefits, or being left alone.
The Incarnation changed all that. Jesus is become the Lord of the living and the dead. The suffering King Jesus lays bare the plans and pride and shining schemes of Lucifer; He bore in himself our sin, and has already won the victory over sin, and death, and Hell.. yet the long wrapping up of the battle will seem almost like defeat, as the faithful must abide darkness in the world, the Church, the human heart, and in malicious spiritual forces.
But, but– What To DO?
Read the headlines; pray; comfort one another; love the sacraments; repent. Read the Bible & the Church Fathers, and the saints. Read solid blogs and books. Same as it ever was, and there’s no greener grass elsewhere. Cheer up! It will very likely get much worse.
Stay faithful, for God is faithful, and will not abandon us, or leave us weak and comfortless and enslaved to the machinations of the Enemy and his minions, nor to our own sins, negligences, and ignorances. These bizarre times WILL be sorted by God, and by his judgment & mercy, and by better Church leaders and theologians in decades and centuries to come. +
“Lo, I am with you always,
even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
[St. Matthew 28:20]
~ OH DEAR.. A ‘Back In My Day’ post from a 1/2 centarian.
Ah, the olden days! Our songs, our dreams and goals, our minds were pondering life & jobs, but usually with dating, fabulously-haired boyfriend-girlfriend, and marriage as the goal. How different from the West in 2017.
The sexual revolution, broken homes, & feminism & biased divorce law & constant texting– all have made it clear to many younger men that hook-ups are barely worth it; relationships very risky, and marriage a non-starter. Many of these kids come from what we used to call broken homes, now.. uh ‘blended families’ or some such euphemistic lie.
Of my younger son and his immediate circle of 10 friends (18-24), only 1 has a current (short term) girlfriend. Others haven’t even been dating for AGES.. all their female friends or co-workers are just that, minus a hook-up here and there. Not with a bang or a whimper– just a “Meh?”
And their wider generation is very much the same… don’t dismiss this, for the family/ marriage/ kids Titanic is long past the iceberg moment. And babies? You’ll have to import people to have them…. you know, like the Khadrs. Or the welfare-people born in another land.
For a post-feminist Christian take on all this, try Dalrock.
THERE’S A world-wide conspiracy against silence, quiet, calm, and it’s coming at us from all directions at once. For those of us who don’t do life at volume-setting 11, it’s destructive, distracting, confusing, and enslaving. All this noise noise noise noise!
Several times in the past few months I’ve waved or called out a greeting to a neighbour on the street– nope: glued to the phone, the iPod, the distractor. It got me thinking.
What To Do?
Kenny Chesney is right that our modern West is all about noise, propaganda, selling things, babble, infotainment, endless electronic demands, devices which gobble our time, our days, our hours of rest. The question, after awakening to the racket and noise, is to ask “What else is there, instead?”
Everything else ever anywhere. The all-precious electronics? Turn them off.
Leave it home. Silence the alerts. You don’t actually need to answer that e-mail or text or to see the funny new kitten video. Tell people when you’d like them to call on the phone, instead of jumping for every call like it’s the police or the lottery.
Unplug. Just go for a walk– you, God, the birds, the breeze, the bugs, the sunshine on the grass.. no disconnecting or dehumanizing smartphone or iPod or shiny thing. Take a nap. Call a friend. Give an ear to someone who could use a good listener. Real things are best: friendship, society, leaving things and people better than you found them.
Make more room in your life for quiet. Read before bed, instead of surfing or chatting or sharing that one last trivial bit of forgettable fluff.
Enquieten your soul, so you can really begin to hear and listen to yourself, and nature, and for the voice of the Lord.. that still small voice which is paved over by the avalanche of modern noise, that needy neighbour or family member or stranger who vanishes behind the distractions.
Not So Easy?
Like any overpowering addiction, it may be painful and take some time to wean yourself away from constant technophilia and hollow ‘connectedness’. Then, try to help your kids, family, friends, co-workers. Shhhh. Listen.
Wrecking balls, downtown construction Bottles breaking, jukebox buzzing Cardboard sign says “The Lord is Coming” Tick, tick, tock Rumors turn the mills back home Parking lot kids with the speakers blown We didn’t turn it on but we can’t turn it off, off, off Sometimes I wonder how did we get here Seems like all we ever hear is noise
Yeah we scream, yeah we shout ’til we don’t have a voice In the streets, in the crowds, it ain’t nothing but noise Drowning out all the dreams of this Tennessee boy Just tryna be heard over all this noise
24 hour television, get so loud that no one listens Sex and money and politicians talk, talk, talk But there really ain’t no conversation Ain’t nothing left to the imagination Trapped in our phones and we can’t make it stop, stop this noise
Yeah we scream, yeah we shout ’til we don’t have a voice In the streets, in the crowds, it ain’t nothing but noise Drowning out all the dreams of this Tennessee boy Just tryna be heard in all this noise
Every room, every house, every shade of noise All the floors, all the walls, they all shake with noise We can’t sleep, we can’t think, can’t escape the noise We can’t take the noise, so we just make noise
Yeah we scream, yeah we shout ’til we don’t have a voice In the streets, in the crowds, it ain’t nothing but noise Drowning out all the dreams of this Tennessee boy Just tryna be heard in all this noise
All this noise Can’t take the noise Can’t take the noise Can’t stand the noise Can’t take the noise
IT IS SOMETIMES asserted by futurist-types that humanity is approaching a “Singularity”, a union with technology, you know, because reasons. Evolution. Progress. Robots. Amusement. Keeping up with it all. Entertainment. A new religion….?
I view this horrific possibility as the final destructive insanity of mankind, where we crawl ever further into our own butts, growing ever smaller and smaller, finally to vanish with a ‘pop’, and nothing more. It is mass-suicide and extinction by machine.
The great lie in the middle of it is that it’s all inevitable, can’t be stopped, evolution, you know, it’s totally going to happen. The other great lie is that the technology is somehow ‘evolving’ to this point– except, it’s people who invent computers, programs, technology, and so it’s other people who are actually shaping the world, the future, and people controlling the possible destiny and doom of all the other people influenced by their gizmos and ideas– via machines and technology.
A union with our own technological creations would be the ultimate tyranny, the perfect world of utopians, except not via political means. It’s also the culmination of elites and controllers everywhere:
“They constantly try to escape From the darkness outside and within By dreaming of systems so perfect that no one will need to be good.”
Oooo! Perfect systems! Forcing everybody to be good! What’s not to like?
Dreaming Dark Dreams
Yet if there is darkness outside us, and evil and imperfection and blindness within us, how then can we hope to perfectly saveourselves with a de-natured techno-heaven, a digital salvation, if that saving thing itself is made by imperfect sinful creatures which cannot see all ends, and all possible consequences? If I can’t outrun my own shadow, how can we manufacture our own perfection?
You can’t escape yourself. The Mad Hatter is amusing in a story, but you wouldn’t want him making and running your utopia, your mind and your life.
The current vanishing of so many kids, teens, and adults into the tiny hand-held world of the smartphone/ tablet for so many of their waking hours is already a warning about how such a “singularity” is likely to turn out. Badly for all concerned, except the profiteers and rulers.
What do we get in return for worshipping the shiny things? Amusement. Advertising. More amusement. Distraction. Control. Spoon feeding. Tiny flitting memories, attached to wizzled up brains unused to logic, passion, love or truth.
What do we lose? Walking through the soaring blue sky cathedral of a leafy walk in a park,– but hearing and seeing no birds, barely noticing the flowers, not sensing the endless activity of all the flying, crawling, creeping, buzzing things everywhere, smelling no leafy mulch, nor spicy pine trees, hardly noticing the breeze through your hair, nor feeling the thrum of the nature in your own heart and bones and countless cells resonating with the nature all around you, both ongoing and self-making creations of the same Everliving God.
You know, because text, or YouTube vid, or funny picture, selfies, or– Squeee!– teh kittehs! Click clicketty click-click. Shiny Thing makes it all better.
But.. Oops.. We Never Meant…
In the ground-breakingly cool & insightful movie The Matrix, humanity is reduced to the status of Duracell batteries, after a war with the machines which we created blocks out the sun, and so they harvest our biochemical energy to run themselves. In the film, ‘The Matrix’ itself is the simulated reality pumped into each brain, to make them imagine they are living a real life in a real world, although it is a illusory computer program.
The other possibility, of course– and it’s real, not just a Terminator movie-script– is if our misbegotten “artificially intelligent” weaponized machines decide to revolt, and we end up in conflict with them. That, or something bad like a global digital mind, made by us, decides humans are some kind of dangerous virus to be ‘cleaned up’.
Yes, inventors and scientists consider both of these real dangers, and problems to be prevented. Seriously.
Advancing Progressively Backwards
Given that the “incredible, inevitable” social, technological, and mechanical progress of 1900 turned into the machine guns, blistering gas attacks, and slaughter fields of the Somme, and the mechanized Holocaust, and strategic mass-bombing of the Second World War, we have absolutely no reason to be naively optimistic. That is: because of what humans are actually like, our schemes and machines and digital machinations will go awry, and tend more towards a dehumanizing, unnatural, disconnected enslavement to technology far greater and more detrimental to freedom, thought, creativity, justice, love, and faith than the mess we’ve already made of the 20th and the 21st century since Christ’s birth.
How do I know? Because via well-meaning inventions like the television, and then the public internets, and then Smartphones and tablets, we’ve already been doing something horrible and propagandistic and mind-numbing and time-killing and soul-wasting and immaturity-boosting for up to 65+ years. What would magically change for the good if The Machine was somehow everywhere, and inside us, too?
If we pursue this path, we will be fashioning our own damnation, and destruction, our own insane heaven and hell all at once, concocted in our own broken image. I told you so.
….But it seems that something has happened that has never happened before: though we know not just when, or why, or how, or where. Men have left GOD not for other gods, they say, but for no God; and this has never happened before That men both deny gods and worship gods, professing first Reason, And then Money, and Power, and what they call Life, or Race, or Dialectic. The Church disowned, the tower overthrown, the bells upturned, what have we to do But stand with empty hands and palms turned upwards In an age which advances progressively backwards?
~ IF YOU RECALL nothing else of this article, then only this: your governments & government-pandering mainstream media are mostly liars and/or puppets, news-“massagers” censors, and concealment artists. It’s been that way for generations.
“Ooooo.. Shocking, Binks: so tell us something we don’t know, elf-boy.”
OK, but that means it’s really up to concerned people around the world to do their own research, listen and learn, trust but verify, fact-check and reserve judgment– and above all, not to all go running off in one direction like a starving dog after a gobbet of bloody meat every time the media tells us to, or the powers that be try to distract us.
Some Big Questions
As yourself– is this ALL the current news? The FULL story? What are we NOT being told, or, what is being mistold? Is this current issue a false big deal, or only a small part of the truth versus other more important things which are being covered up or backpaged?
How is online social media manipulated to pull our attention here and there, or to cover things up which are otherwise in plain view? FaceBook & Twitter & MicroSoft are not your special buddies.
For those who are on a disability, unemployed, or retired, this is a special opportunity to redeem the time. Learn up on news-finding, fact-checking, and puzzle-assembly. As the TV show The X-Files said, “The Truth Is Out There”… and no, I’m not directing you to alien / Nazi moonbases, or werewolves amongst us.
I’d also warn that some rabbit-holes have no bottom, and you don’t want to waste all your time on clock-killing topics. Be warned.
Here’s part of the hidden truth of this mess– the fraudulent current “Refugee Crisis” is a stage-managed deliberate policy. It is also a form of 4th Generation warfare, in which mass immigration is another way of conquest, crushing nationalism and localism in favour of globalism. And to crack down on Jihad at home with more “Peace And Security” soft-fascism. It’s a twofer: using Jihadis to beat ourselves over the head, and ginning up “useful crises”.
In this or related news, curious Canadians will get NO straight answers from Ottawa, CTV or CBC, or the well-meaning in our society, who jump on every handy bandwagon and tell anybody with doubts that they are mean, racist, bigoted, and hateful. Just take that of granted, and look to decent alternative media.
The Phony ‘Migrant’ ‘Crisis’
What then? Research. Ask around. First question: “Is This True?” Go YouTube & Internets wander asking “Cui bono?” (“Who benefits?”). Watch out for hardcore loonys.
People who are interested in the actual story of this cooked-up ‘refugee’ crisis? The following links at least break the mono-story, and the grip of the mainstream media in your head, and help you to ask and think and see through the spin. Don’t settle for the spoon-fed answers. Try these:
Iraqis posing as Syrians. Hm. Didn’t see that on CNN.
Passports? Actual verifiable IDs? Further, DAESH/ ISIL/ ISIS has promised 4000 new ‘migrant/ refugee’ terrorists in Europe via the flood of ‘refugees’– more Brussels, more Paris, more Charlie Hebdos. This is a self-inflicted wound, and the elites don’t care if the peasants get hurt: they have master-plans afoot.
I’m not saying these alternative commentators are The Truth, and all other or offical news is not. Trust, But Verify.
However, military-aged Muslim men of no specific address? Back of the line, because they may want to import terror, sharia, mosques, and slow demographic conquest into the dying West, and they’re willing to wait decades to do it. “Refugees”? Plain-clothed paramilitaries, maybe? And most not from Syria, but Iraq. That is, mostly FAKE refugees.
Yes, we made this problem by Western warmongering, wrecking other countries, and not having children– but importing our own conquerers just makes it all so much worse. As I said in this recent piece, we must adjust our minds to this new kind of warfare, where everybody is on the front line, and war is everywhere.
Indeed, Pope Magical Thinker Happy Unicorns apparently even attributes some kind of magical powers to the.. ‘migrants’. And, it appears, that even European dirt is super-magical, and will change all newcomers from people brought up in tyrannical sharia-run Muslim icky countries into regular 21st century soft-socialist Europeasants. Ri-i-ight.
That Other Pope, The Elf
In this matter, Ye Not-Pope Binks III doth hereby decree, promulgate, and officially state and mutter– Trust, but Verify. Be WILLING to love & care for & help ACTUAL refugees, when and if they are proven to be so. “Be as wise as serpents, but as gentle as doves”, said Jesus.
When. And. If.
The Real Thing, Only
My Dad was raised in Scotland, so technically on that side, I’m a first generation Canadian, the son and grandson of immigrants through Halifax’s Pier 21, someone who has committed myself to the life, society, well-being and future of this welcoming land of Canada.
Until we have the full story, and real immigrants, let’s stay informed, trust but verify, speak out and educate, and don’t pretend or think you live in a world where very much actually is as is made to appear. Even evil people knew that. ~
