Titanicalism

IT STILL SITS as the second highest grossing movie ever: James Cameron’s 1997 Titanic, by James Cameron. $2,186,772,302.00 and change. Not a great flick, but a good one. Personally, I’m just as impressed by the fact of James Cameron’s one-man submarine trip down 7 miles to the bottom of the Marianas Trench…

Sailing, Sailing

Our world is the Titanic: and what you think is going on in life or the life of the world depends very much on what part of the voyage you focus on. I explain.

For some, we’re on a journey in a mighty vessel to the new world, just over the horizon. Full speed ahead! What could possibly go wrong? Look.. all the best people are here, and agree with us! Moar caviar!

Not long after, the speeding unsinkable shears off countless cold-brittle rivets on an iceberg. The designers had not imagined such a thing, nor prepared for it. As the bow settles, water will keep moving backwards over the watertight bulkheads, until.. doom.

Me, I’m a “life is bow-settling” guy. Death– the water– is creeping up surely and unavoidably. Order is breaking down, people are scrambling for lifeboats, and while some are going full-panic or full-denial, others are trying to abide by their duty, and to help as much as possible, as the Great Ship Utopia begins to founder in earnest into the icy North Atlantic.

Utopia, Right Ahead!

For many modern day Utopians– this-worldly salvation true-believers– it is in human reach and wisdom to make heaven on earth. Human beings are basically good, and just need enough browbeating, herd-mentality, and extra rules, and we will make a perfect world out of our super-duper selves.

Bizarrely, the very hubris of the modernist movement that built the Titanic and infected politics, and has also infected the Catholic Church. The clueless notion that the 1960s Church would “Listen to the World”, that we needed no redemption just a little buffing, and all would progress together in a la-la-land journey of common purpose and happy thoughts.. the Denial-As-Faith it took place in an actual sinking-Titanic world.

denial

Consider– at the same time as sin and sacrifice and salvation were being thrown overboard, and a mind-boggling naiveté about human goodness and perfectibility was put on the altar, let us remember that the 20th century was the century of blood; of genocides; of industrial slaughter, of two catastrophic world wars with hundreds of millions dead, injured, made refugee.. plus, with technology abroad to have a third and very final War.

Even as the faux-clever theologians and happy-thinking bishops were trying to remake the faith into something unChristian and unrecognizable, the ovens of Auschwitz were not 20 years cold; Soviet Gulags and Chinese death-camps were brimming over; that World War Three had nearly begun a couple years before over Cuba; that despite the rush of technology and Western prosperity, that fallen human nature had not actually changed, and that we needed the Cross of Christ and His risen life more than ever.

Even the ancient pagans knew better: “Those whom the gods would destroy” they warned “they first drive mad.” Denial is a sweet addiction: but reality is always best.

Living In Dreams

Forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever….

As if it were 1905, and a perfect world was just ahead, out went the old religion, the Latin, the rosaries, the relics, the art and architecture: come now the felt banners and camping songs, the puppets & clowns, the moralistic therapeutic deist sermons (with a dash of revolution), of a new and sinless humanity feeling its oats in experiment and innovation and… “Iceberg, right ahead!!”

Mortality? Still with us. Human failing, cruelty, blindness, and evil? Check. Our limitations, blindness, and failed good intentions? Yup. Hurting one another, deliberately and just because? Pretty much. Violence, false belief, unspeakable deeds, a foolish naivete? Mass murder? Warfare? Always & everywhere.

Mao-Human-Rights
Prisoners at Jiangbei prison, Hubei province, in 1998. Look! Free transplants, slave-labour, and neatening up the political process all in one!

Only, for all these abiding and tragic realities of our bent human nature, progressive religion has no answers, having treated as flotsam and jetsam the faith of our fathers, the wisdom of 20 Christians centuries and 15 Hebrew centuries before that; the riches of Roman Law and Greek philosophy and theatre; and all the good things of Western Civilization. Yard sale.. we have shiny new plastic things!

So the next time some smirking collar tells you all is well, celebrate yourself, God is (only) love, and love is probably God, hug a warm puppy and be happy– realize he’s trying to sell you a berth on the sinking Titanic, has no answers, no salvation to pass on to you, and is not in touch with the Real, or Jesus, or God– nor the reality of life and death and sin.

ITYS,

There’s more wisdom and human feeling and recognition of sin in the following Scouting campfire song than in a modernist post-Christian hymn or sermon.

The Titanic (Husbands And Wives) Camp Song

Traditional

Oh they built the ship Titanic
To sail the ocean blue
And they thought they had a ship
That the water would never go through;
But the Lord’s Almighty hand
Said that ship would never land,
It was sad when that great ship went down.

Chorus:
It was sad. It was sad.
It was sad when the great ship went down.
(to the bottom of the…)
Husbands and wives,
Little children lost their lives
It was sad when the great ship went down.)

They were off from England
And not very far from shore
When the rich refused
To associate with the poor
So they sent them down below
Where they’d be the first to go
It was sad when that great ship went down.

Chorus

The boat was about to sink,
And the sides about to burst,
When the captain shouted, “All
Women and children first!”
Oh, the captain tried to wire,
But the wires was on fire,
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Chorus

Oh, they swung the lifeboats out
O’er the deep and ragin’ sea,
When the band struck up with,
“Nearer My God to Thee.”
Little children wept and cried,
As the waves swept o’er the side,
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Chorus

~ RECALLING HISTORY can protect us now, and in the future. Sometimes you really do have to fight the enemies of humanity and freedom and faith.

Thanks to some recent FB posts, Ann Barnhardt vids, and Victorian boy’s historical novellist G.A. Henty (here’s the entire book online: No Surrender! A Tale of the Rising in La Vendée), plus a little innertube research, I’ve been learning rather a lot about a still hush-hush moment of the French Devolution: the purge of the Vendée, or the Vendée War (said: Vonn-day), 1793-1796.

The Plot Sickens

Execution of King Louis XVI in 1792. Dr. Guillotin opposed the death penalty. After his death in 1814, his children, embarrassed by the association with the device, changed their surname to ”Mercier”.

Like all nearly ominipotent moral busybodies, the early 1790s Paris radicals promised all the good things for free, and then got busy filling all of France with the benefits of denunciation, confiscation, and decapitation. You know, for the good of ‘The People’ (in Paris). They imprisoned clergy, doctors, merchants, aristocrats, and uppity politicians, to cut the head off any possible resistance.

>> Evil revolutionaries will always attack faith & clergy, any likely leaders, and any punish & attack any man or woman who fights back or speaks out, i.e. ‘counter-revolutionaries’. Watch for it.

Not everywhere gave in so quickly: Lyons fought back; Toulon actually invited the British navy in; and the hardy peasants of a little patch of farm and hedgerows and forest called the Vendée grabbed their pitchforks and farming implements.

>> It’s important to look at your maps, digest the news, pray about it, and act accordingly.

This Should Be Easy Enough

The locals– at first, largely gunless peasants versus troops– actually kicked the bums out. The clevers in Paris reeled.

The French Revolution tottered on a cliff-edge as peasants fought the French military to a standstill over several years, until overwhelmed over 3 years by deliberate total war: burning and destruction of everything in the Vendée, killing of livestock, burning of whole villages and towns, atrocities against men women and children, mass murder & execution… all the usual radical/ revolutionary list of horrors which were and are repeated so many times over the ensuing century and a half.

But Wait, There’s More

Present at some of these battles? A young Corsica-born artillery commander, named Bonaparte. He refused to fire on non-combatants, and was so impressed by the courage and decency of the Vendeans that when he took power in 1799, he restored many of the freedoms of the Church.

>> The enemy are not usually as strong and united as they appear. Learn their weaknesses, and yours. Act accordingly.

Sadly, the leaders of the resistance didn’t get the word out to England, or even across all of France (or put out a blog or online fundraiser, or Twitter # campaign), or any such appeals for help. At several points during the uprising, an infusion of regular British troops and money and arms would have broken the back of the regicidal peasant-murdering revolution.

Though victory was in reach, yet the ordinary folk of the Vendée just didn’t have it in them to march on Paris itself. The whole ugly, bloody, petty, murderous new regime was run from Paris, and it might have been overthrown by a truly mass uprising.

>> Widespread communication, acting in time, and with allies, can save a lot of sorrow later.

The Usual Revolting

The pro-Communist French Revolution started with grand promises, and ended in mass graves (one seen above). As usual.
The proto-Communist French Revolution started with grand promises, and ended in Vendée mass graves (one seen above). As usual.

At least 250 000 locals were slaughtered, starved, or executed, for the crime of wanting their Catholic faith, their little patch of earth, and not to be meddled with by cold-hearted monsters like Marat, the demonic Danton, bloody Robespierre, and their ilk. However, all such ‘revolutionaries’ drink the blood of others, before the revolution consumes them also.

>> Freedom-fighters against true tyrants leave a record of their success & failure. Study it, and endeavor at the least to make fresh mistakes, and not repeat the old ones.

Learn up about that time, which foreshadowed so much of our time, and the real roots and results of ‘progressivism’. The revolutionists can only succeed by ever more meddling, dominating. and– eventually– killing. They depict the world in two shades only. The enemies of the revolution are not just different, or disagreers– no, they are the enemies of humanity, of hope and history and the future. Exterminate!

>> People who are well-meaning but driven by evil ideology are often willing to fight, and die for the cause. Are we in the West willing to debate, suffer, fight and die for the good things of God given to us to hand on to others?

It’s Still Not Over, Yet

796

How powerful and humiliating to the 1790s regime was this peasant war in the Vendée? This much– France will still not officially acknowledge that anything of note happened in the Vendée then, or now, over 220 years later.

You know, don’t want to raise the ghosts of the past, or poke into any mass-graves. Even though those events have echoed and echoed across further fields of blood and genocide inspired by the destructive French example.

Cruel Jacobins, All

After all, you know who was a huge fan of the example and methods of that horrid revolution? A spotty, adultering library-dwelling mooch on his friends.. named Karl Marx. The Communism he inspired led to at least 150 million dead. So far. And there were others:

“Both Lenin and Hitler praised their Jacobin filiation. From the Jacobin sans-culottes came the Red Guard and the SS. The red and black ideologies of extermination justified their genocides with arguments similar to those used by the Convention to justify the genocide in Vendée. And the Jacobin ideology continues to inspire the subversion of the ideas of liberty, equality and fraternity into a totalitarian individualism that destroys the natural communities, beginning with the family, and that confiscates the fundamental freedom of education of children by their parents.

Less than twenty years after the end of the USSR, the Russian State, even though in some ways a continuation of the Soviet system, honored itself by repenting for the assassination of the Tsar and his family, and by replacing Russia in its historical and religious continuity.

France is in need of a similar symbolic gesture. The State, by repenting for the original crimes of our republic would liberate our national memory, and accomplish a far-reaching act of French Friendship…”

Stick that in your festering & blood-soaked ‘La Marseillaise‘ and smoke it. Nasty lowlife mass-murdering cowards. The modern French Left still deny history, reality, bones and atrocities, in their quest for utopia, human self-purification, and endless lying about their opponents, past and present… even as the flames of Jihad encroach on their bloated, faithless, over-taxed proto-utopia.

Learn now, learn fast, read the signs of the times. ~
