This: A Warning To Canada

half mast

~ MY BELOVED Canada has been– longer than the Trudeaus, but sped up by them both– in a long slow fall away from our founding principles, towards every excess, bad idea, and anti-Christian notion on the books.

This sermon is a lovely thunderbolt of warning to awaken, fight, and work with God to stand on guard, keep our land glorious and free. Or fall.

No Upbeat Homily for Canada Day

Canada Day only falls on Sunday once every seven years. That’s an opportunity for an upbeat homily about our beautiful country and our many blessings. But not this year—because we need to take a look at some things that are happening in Canada and what they mean for Christians.

I know you’d rather hear a homily celebrating Canada than criticizing it; so would I. But a friend sent me a quotation this week attributed to Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who was not only America’s best preacher but a 20th century prophet. When I read it, I knew I couldn’t deliver a feel-good sermon today.

Long quotations don’t make good homilies, but I’m asking you to listen carefully to these prophetic words:

Humanity in a crisis is generally insensitive to the gravity of the times in which it lives.

Men do not want to believe their own times are wicked, partly because they have no standard outside of themselves by which to measure their times. If there is no fixed concept of justice, how shall men know it is violated?

Only those who live by faith really know what is happening in the world; the great masses without faith are unconscious of the destructive processes going on because they have lost the vision of the heights from which they have fallen.

I don’t think one Canadian in ten thinks we have a problem in this country. And I do think that most of those who recognize the destructive processes at work are people of faith.

But even men and women of faith often fail to understand the heights from which Canadian society has tumbled, because our fall from Christian morality has happened in slow motion—not from one cause but from many.
We could analyze numerous social shifts that are opposed to Gospel values—for that matter, opposed to the values shared by most major religions—but I want to point out three of the most recent.

I

The first, of course, is euthanasia. Disguised by the Orwellian name “Medical Assistance in Dying,” the legalization of assisted suicide threatens the vulnerable, draws health care workers in to a moral snare, and creates an entirely false idea of compassion. It should not be necessary to remind people at Sunday Mass that assisted suicide can never be the right choice, but our first reading puts it simply: “God does not delight in the death of the living.”

Life is a good in and of itself— God “created all things so that they might exist.” All life is precious; its value is not measured by the so-called “quality of life” or anything of that sort.

We were created for eternity, and it is in eternity that the quality of life will more than compensate for the struggles some people encounter at the end of their life on earth.

Before turning to the second social shift—I should really call these legal shifts—I want to give you another reason for this somber homily on what should be a joyful day. The reason is simply this: law-abiding people, people like us, tend to think that if something’s legal is must be right. Law not only reflects social values, it creates them.

Archbishop Carney once told me that chicken wasn’t subject to meat rationing during the Second World War. As a result, Catholics—who were not allowed to eat meat on Friday—started to eat chicken, since if the government said it wasn’t meat, it must be true.

II

The second shift is the redefinition of tolerance. Canadians pride themselves on tolerance. American comedians on the late-night shows make jokes about how nice we are. But my dictionary says that to tolerate means “to allow the existence or occurrence of something, without interference.”

The courts have redefined tolerance in numerous decisions interfering with the freedom of people of faith. The most recent may be the most serious: the Supreme Court of Canada has effectively allowed the legal profession to be closed to graduates of a law school where students must commit to live according to the moral norms that were once universally held by all Christians. In the words of the two dissenting judges, the Court has turned the protective shield of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms into a sword.

And there’s not much doubt which group of Canadians that sword will slash.

III

The third source of sadness on this Canada Day may surprise you, since it’s hardly as grave as the euthanasia or Trinity Western decisions. But as I told you, I’m focusing on the most recent social shifts, and this one’s also current—the court-ordered legalization of marijuana, now enshrined in law.

Just last week, the Canadian bishops issued a statement reminding Catholics of the harm that will flow from increased marijuana use. They cite the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Psychiatric Association, and the Canadian Paediatric Society as pointing out how “the use of cannabis is linked to addictions, depression, anxiety, psychosis, damage to brain development, and lung problems such as asthma and emphysema.”

Although I didn’t use marijuana, I grew up hearing that it was not addictive. That was a lie or at least a huge mistake in terms of what we know now. The bishops rely on modern science and the modern understanding of addictions when they say marijuana “is an addictive substance that will have disastrous effects” for many people.

There was a time when a Canadian who didn’t break the law would be following God’s law in most matters. Sadly, tragically, that time has passed. Only the Creator’s law can guide us now to the good life, and to the righteousness that leads to life eternal.

It is truer than ever that

“Only those who live by faith really know what is happening in the world; the great masses without faith are unconscious of the destructive processes going on because they have lost the vision of the heights from which they have fallen.”

So on this Canada Day, let’s not only pray for the nation, but lift up our eyes to the lofty vision of creation and the human person that is our heritage as Canadians and Christians.

~ WOW, WHAT  A FEW DAYS. Like going 100 miles an hour on fire on a bicycle riding backwards. An asteroid has just struck the heart of America. Fallout  and suffering and death (can you say ‘Roe V. Wade’?) to continue for generations.

To Be Really Clear

If I did support ‘anything goes’ marriage, I would be embarrassed and offended that bullying, cheats, silencing, mocking, and other forms of abuse of process and people were being done by my side. Not in my name, clowns.

‘Neener neener!’ and end-zone dancing is bad sportsmanship. Making crap up out of nothing like inJustice Kennedy did is bad law. Taking people to court over legitimate conscience and freedom of speech and freedom of association is bad citizenship, and abuse of neighbour. Where is the dignity of difference?

Now, President ‘Or Else’ is telling dissenting Christians, Muslims, and Jews they’d better shape up and get onside ASAP, in your name. Nope, no threatening there, when the most powerful man in the country gets his antiChrist on and starts thinking he is speaking directly for Almighty God.

Whoa there, Binks– antiChrist? Well, I dunno if he’s THE, but he’s AN. That’s what you are doing when you effectively tell God to keep his nose out of things; or act or claim (in the name of sin and error) to be speaking directly for God. Leaving the actual God and his Church and his revelation and his Son to be an afterthought, or a political tool, and acting like the messiah himself? Evil. Dangerous, dangerous evil.

Besides, is that who you progressives want speaking for you, and in that way? Or is reality so simple that just a little dusting and clearing away the deadwood and utopia is here? As long as he gets us what we want, we’ll put up with him?

Really? Those tactics, in your name?

Evil Binks Is Still Evil

Back in my Anglican info-warrior days, I asked some of these same questions, and received no answer. Apparently, we live in darkening days of The Ends Justify Any Means, Hypocritically, some of those who in Nazi times would have worn pink triangles in Auschwitz now operate by the same lawless, heartless, smash it all down mentality of the Sturmtruppen and the SS, at least politically and religiously and legally speaking.

I’ve copied over some of my old comments onto a new page for ease of reading below. I genuinely hate to say it, but I told you so.

Unapologetic then, and I’m unapologetic now. Truth is truth is truth. TRUE love must tell it. Come and get me.

Cheer up, it’s going to get much, much worse, and at an accelerating speed.

FIRST AGAINST THE WALL WHEN THE REVOLUTION COMES…

The Rainbow Boot: Queer As Volk?

CaNN Commentary

According to Godwin’s Law, when either Hitler or Nazis come up in a debate, the end of sane discussion is at hand. Oh well.

The more this observer sees of the crazy off-the-scale Left in church or society, the more it reminds me of the mindset and techniques of totalitarianism. Take the creeping assault on religious freedom in Canada and England, in the name of ‘ diversity’ or tolerance. Freedom of speech threatened without a second thought; religious freedom increasingly fenced in, so that morally traditional religious freedoms exist at the beck-and call of governments, tribunals, and the whim of the perpetually discontented. Even lives threatened. Such is the price of yet another heaven on earth.

Thinking All Fascistical

Now, if I were a fascist, and some fascistical event or development took place, I’d keep quiet, or perhaps rejoice . If I were a freedom-loving person, I’d simply have to protest. So we have pro same-sex militants Richard Kirker in England, or Louie Crew in the United States. When the religious or other freedoms of people they disagree with are threatened or curtailed, should they not speak out clearly against such infringement? Well yes, IF they were consistently freedom-loving people.

To be fair, perhaps they failed to notice the inconsistency, or looked the other way. Perhaps they were busy with other things. Perhaps the interior political culture of the same-sex movement only allows for only one protected class of victim and rights to be fought for. Perhaps re-education camps are very IN this season.

In any case, as you read through our pages, and see how the activists and their allies get things done, it smells like right-denying, democracy-crushing, bend the rules, the ends justify any and all means some-are-more-equal-than-others totalitarianism. Narcissism bent on revenge, perhaps?

Such movements appear parasitic and illogical by nature; abusing freedom, and denying it to others; poisoning democracy, yet depending on it; claiming God’s own blessing while denying His will and Word; proclaiming itself a liberation, and yet willing to look the other way at the injury and limiting of fellow Christians, human beings, and people made in the image of God.

Others Have Noticed, Too

The CaNN News Editor is not the first one to notice bullying fascistic and mind-controlling tendencies in the same-sex movement. In Canada, John McKeller, the President of Homosexuals Opposed to Pride Extremism (HOPE) spoke out on the matter in 2003. Provocative gay writer Camille Paglia has spoken often of gay activism as narrow, elitist, and fascist– even of a “gay Stalinism“, in her 2002 article ‘The Gay Inquisition‘.

Hissy-fits and whitewash just will not do.

This is a reminder to Christians that the pastoral task of befriending and loving those with same-sex addiction also requires prayer and wisdom for the renewing of their minds, and in some cases the setting aside of the totalitarian impulse.

It is also a judgement on the liberal churches for allowing such anti-human and anti-Christian totalitarian ideology to enter the church, and to be labelled as authentically Christian– and to label faithful and thoughtful opponents of the innovations as bigots and 2nd-rate Christians.

If conservative Anglicanism espoused the methods and mindset of the totalitarian Left, I’d drop it like a hot potato. Will the mad Left do the same?

Any questions?

Oh, and dear activists: please send us heads-ups on all your protest-marches, letter-writing campaigns, new websites, books, hunger-strikes, conferences, online petitions, interviews, press releases, and your general outrage over these kinds of violent and hateful abuses, done precisely for the sake and in the name of your movement.
