Annie’s links were bloody obvious, if you think about it– they depict and old-fashioned Catholic procession in France, where some communities are sharia-no-go-zones, and where churches are vandalized and Jews threatened.
Our foundations in the West– of science, art, literature, music, philosophy, and Christianity– are our foundations. Even the Enlightenment thinkers knew of what they were rejecting in part (and assuming under the carpet). Today, ignorance or rejection thereof, especially to allow our sexual and moral autonomy, does not mean the foundations are not, only that they are, and are taken for granted and allowed to fall slowly into ruin.

Even the brief Muslim flowering of philosophy, engineering, medicine, and other medieval goodies were inherited or done via classical & Christian & Byzantine influences. That they were eventually snuffed out as unIslamic is the real face of Muhammadan obscurantism & irrationality. Islam is a demand, not a reason. “Submit”, not “Follow me” or “Come, let us reason together.”
The path to renewal– say, via a truly liberal spine position like that of Harper or Merkel– also involved remembering our spiritual roots. As Pope Benedict has suggested, it does not mean forced conversion, but at least taking a leap of principle.. acting as if Christian morality & theology were true– as if there were reasons, and hope, and a common basis for action, thought, and goodness.
The authentic non-radicalized Jews & Christians can thus remember & re-appropriate what is theirs; that spiritual, intellectual & moral glue can spread its influence in society & culture and the chattering classes; the faux foundations of godless modernity, multiculti, utopianism, or Marxist-style JihadiTerror have proven themselves to be straw and sand wishful thinking and good intentions.
On Which We Stand
A house depends on a sound foundation. Secularity depends on the sacred, as the mediaevals understood. The sacred & secular were never opposed or exclusive of each other in the Thomistic conception: It`s never been God or Caesar, Church or State, but The sacred as the big bubble, with the secular as a smaller bubble within, under God`s providence and ordering– related, but not direct: so not theocracy, but the church speaking God`s will and word and voice, and working for the good and peace of society.
Even professional atheists like Richard Dawkins feel that in their gut, even if it doesn’t square with their almighty reason & vitriolic attacks on the foundations.

Very Picturesque
A seemingly old-fashioned church-parade, smirked at by clevers and of interest to tourists? Or a radical act of freedom in the face of rising threats of darkness and slavery and the crumbling of foundations as the West goes down to age of chaos and collapse?
Even if that does happen, on what foundation can things be maintained, rebuilt, made strong? Our inward debates and disagreements are important, but rather a luxury given that within the next decade Islamo-nukes will have changed everything.

~ OK, SO SOME AGING Boomers want to smoke up, and their kids & grandkids don’t see the harm, and the polls say lots of people want to decriminalize marijuana.
Here’s the thing: we’re compulsive over-users. Instead of a little sugar, a little booze, a little pipeweed, a little intoxicant, we’re over-users: gluttons, stressed and compulsive and greedy. Plus, the marijuana of the current decades is stuff that is much stronger than in hippie-days of yore.. let alone the original use and strength of coca leaves amongst South American natives.

That, and for many, the deep temptation of escape from emotional or existential pain or struggle.. you know, life. Why not get stoned, instead of dealing with feelings? Why not escape into intoxicated imaginary bliss– and end up with whatever problems you had before, plus drug addiction? Because it’s a lie, it’s a false reality, and it can create emotionally and mentally crippled people.
Personally, I want the airline pilot taking me across the continent to be stone-cold sober, as well as the school bus driver carting my offsprings to their daily grind, or the surgeon opening my body with a scapel. I want my kids & the neighbour’s kids to mature though perseverance, tough it out, and learn to handle life’s disappointments and victories without groovy intoxicants. After all, anybody who’s seen kids & XBoxes will know about the deadly danger of escapism & addiction.
As fro the medical side, there’s lots and lots and lots of long-term medical studies indicating the genetic, cognitive, and even schizophrenic harms associated with smoking marijuana. Pro-Pot advocates will disagree, but that’s the nature of the beast– denial, due to desire– and facts remain facts.

The death of any sense of the common good, or being our brother & sister’s keeper is one of the deep-seated rots in our individualistic society. Outlawing certain things & activites precisely because some people might be tempted & ruined is a basic principle of a caring society (as is the idea that the government shouldn’t be preying on people, nor serving the fickle goddess Fortuna)– hence the prior ban on widespread gambling, and our looking the other way at many ruined lives, broken families, and suicides, all because we personally want a little lotto-hope, or a dash of Vegas now and then. “What can it hurt?” we say to ourselves, not being tempted to compulsion or addiction in that particular area.

It makes quite a picture to contrast past ages’ definition of freedom and maturity to our own, where for some people it has slithered down the slippery slope to mean I want the freedom (with no consequences) to drink, smoke, gamble, guzzle, screw, and otherwise enjoy myself as I see fit– and nobody should be allowed to harsh my mellow in any way whatsoever. Is this the freedom for which Christ died? For which Englishmen fought and suffered so that we might have liberty under law? For which the Crusaders lay down their lives so Islam did not overtake Europe? For which two World Wars and a Cold War were fought, at the cost of hundreds of millions of lives?
If so, it seems a debased kind of piggish freedom to wallow in, accountable to nobody, glorying in nothing, bread and circuses and glowing screens the fullness of our existence.

Let’s remember the kind of folks who brought this intoxicant culture to the forefront– Marxist anti-Western hippies, who rejoiced in the fascist overthrow of universities, who gave us speech codes and rampant abortion and no-fault divorce, and the AIDS epidemic, and “hooking up” and all the other questionable joys of the 1950’s & 1960s sexual, political, and moral devolution commanded them by The Frankfurt School, and anarchic human folly unleashed.
So no, I don’t think decriminalizing various narcotics in Canada or anywhere else is in any way a good thing. ~

It’s a simple logical/ theological matter– (1) If God exists, and (2) said Almighty seems to approve of life of all sorts (as we can see on earth), and (3) his creative will is that there be life and intelligently so, therefore, (4) where conditions allow, there has been/ is/ will be life elsewhere than on earth.
Got it? Life. All over the place, where possible. Mind you, it may be anything from bacteria on up.. and not necessarily chemically like us, and there may be no otherwise like us right handy– and we might want to go cautiously, in case some of them are interstellar orcs from a galactic Mordor. No apologies to Gene Roddenberry, but even his silly utopianism didn’t work in his own TV show.
The other reason this is likely is also simple– our own earth, and human nature itself are still mysteries to us, with new discoveries every time we look. How can we suppose our finite and imperfect understanding– sometimes in recent ages called ‘science’– has it all sorted out? A humble allowance for mystery is wisest.
Smarterest Than Thou
This amateur lover of science and astronomy gets mighty miffed by the have-it-both-ways ‘tude of the materialists. So we hear (a) if there’s no life elsewhere, it proves we’re a mere accident, and there’s no God; versus (b) if life turns out to be everywhere, as I suppose above, that (b) we’re nothing special, just one more example of a lot of life everywhere.
[BUZZER-NOISE] Sloppy begging the question, taking for granted what has to be proven, that there is no God, and we’re not special.
Materialists need to be a lot more humble about the scope of their ‘knowledge’, and what they may pontificate upon.

Binks On Blog Writing
~ BURNING WITHIN ME.. blogging seriously (not simply on a favoured topic, or to air opinions to myself & a few stray visitors) is a labour of love. I.E., sometimes it’s a grind and you just gotta do it.
But then the writing muse kicks in, and no matter how fuddled my brain or health may be, somewhat decent stuff keeps arriving in my brain from the muses, God, my own addled wits, and the needs of the moment. Further, the aggregating of links & stories (lovingly sorted & hand-tooled) are often the seeds to the essays– good aggregating is a difficult art, of shaping and connecting and building news links in a pattern.. it’s like making a mosaic of sorts, where the little tesserae go to making the great picture.
Aggregational Aggravation
I remember once having an argument with pioneering religion blogger, journalist & professor Terry Mattingly about featuring the work The Elf Himself was doing at that time on CaNN (Classical Anglican Net News) covering the Anglican beat: “It’s not a blog,” he said. Grr, I replied.. I aggregate, and shape and form the stuff.. Mattingly never did give in, but he did link & use some of my graphics, so fair’s fair, I suppose.
Then, the links had a sentence or two of acerbic/ gimlet-eyed comment– I rarely wrote essays, partly out of real humility, and not having found an ‘editorial voice’. That changed later with CaNN, and then Free Mark Steyn.
I leave it to show-offs, snobs, and elitists to produce inscrutable offerings– my goal in writing comes from my habit of composing three-layered sermons: preach to everyone, so the trailer-park resident, ordinary well-read person, and then the well-educated can all get something out of it. Here, it’s about summarizing, observing, explaining, discerning, encouraging, warning, with that same ‘for everyone’ idea.

~ AS A FAN OF non-nihilistic zombie flicks (lovin’ the Shaun Of The Dead, and the 2006 gem Fido), I recently rented from the local Binkiland BlockBuzzard The new 2010 indy zombie comedy Aaah! Zombies!‘
The premise is interesting: what if new zombies didn’t know they were dead? And ended up seeking a freedomland where they could live free of human discrimination and misunderstanding? Hilarity ensues… kinda. I said no spoilers.
It’s a solid B-movie show with lotsa laughs and smart writing. No nudity or needless gore or teh nekkids. Check it out. ~

It’s a religion, partly derived from real religion (Christianity & Judaism), to love your neighbour, succour the needy, orphans & widows, to be God’s servants where and how we can. Then it became a dogmatically secular religion, in a way that would give John Knox, The Popes, or the Patriarch of Constantinople the heebie-jeebies.
Now, we have Boss DoGoos (High Warmists, Eco-Prophets, Tobacco-Smiters, Speech-Hushers) giving big rules and lotsa little rules for their DoGoo minions to run about imposing countless rules on everybody else for their own [a.k.a., The Greater] good.
For Example
One nearby town to BinkiLand has official bylaws actually enforced by the town cops (The RCMP) including the verbotening of engine-idling, and smoking in cars with kids present. Not that such are abiding temptations for countless members of the populace, but a stand must be taken! Bylaws solemnly enounced! Wrongs forbidden on pain of hefty fines! This, of course, is on top of the local refuse & recycling nazis & green binnery and all their strictures and powers.
Libertariacs insist the true answer to all this rampant & snoopy do-goodery is less rules, almost no government, and let the innate goodness of people and the market and stuff settle matters. In this, they reveal themselves the grandchildren of gits like Voltaire, who enticingly envisioned liberte, egalite, fraternite.. all of which ended up under Napoleon’s hordes & secret police & execution. Hitler 1.0, the practice run.
We must have a public & private morality or forms thereof which are commonly agreed upon, and which allow for both constraint & freedom; shame & approval; law & liberty. The Church did that for 1600 years or so, but clever men thought to build upon different foundations– some of the results have been good, and Christianity has adapted.
However, once the last fumes of Christianity pass from the public sphere & general acknowledgement, we don’t find paradise breaking out, but big government, boredom, high taxes, some moral anarchy, antisemitism, Jihadism, and the misery of a lot of people affected by the social experiments on the rats in society. ~

The trillions-tsunami is sweeping around the world– only, because it’s a bunch of zeroes and 1s in computers, we can sorta look the other way, and governments can pretend nothing’s going on, or that the stuff collapsing or imploding around us is nothing to worry about. Don’t panic, we’ve got it under control.
Except not. Heck, my property taxes just went down.. because real estate prices are going down locally… and elsewhere.
The 2008 world financial implosion never stopped– the governments in the West tried to buy up the toxic debt, and re-inflate their economies by printing money and selling off debt. Except.. that doesn’t work, because most companies and consumers still feel a chill in their bones that tells them to hold back, beware and be careful, because there’s a giant bear in the woods.. not far away.
It’s a big effing bear, larger than those pre-historic giants our ancestors had to hunt with large groups.. the kind that could snap up a grizzly as a snack.
This elf is not as who should say an economist, nor a student of that odd science– which seems a mix of alchemy and guessing and turning gold into lead. I’m just saying that economic chaos is with us, except everybody who knows what’s going on is telling us to remain calm.
Never mind the Mayans and 2012.. I’m guessing 2011 will be a mighty ‘interesting’ year for the world’s economy, for individual nations, and ordinary folks. Please note I’m not getting any schadenfreudulent jollies out of all this: unlike the climate doomers & their close cousins the apocalytics, I hope for the best & prepare for the worst.

~ SO THE NEW SHOW The Walking Dead is well worth watching (if gory, plus a little NSFW), alongside the spate of other Zombie/ apocalypse/ End Of The World As We Know It media that I swear is making me wonder if our minds & souls are tuning into some impending doom or not. It’s a comic adaptation, like HellBoy and a lot of other recent ‘indy’ movies.
Anyhow, in Episode one, the protagonist (a deputy sheriff) ends up in Atlanta, hiding inside an Abrams tank.. with a hundred zombies on the outside. OK, now granted most of us would need a diaper change at such a time, but it’s a tank. My first question (unlike his) was simple: gas?
That is, was the tank stranded, or overcome by zombies? Further, did it have backup power to run the gun? Ammo? They teach kids to drive the things, so presumably starting it and such can’t be all that unpossible, right?
Then drive up and down the street for a while, making zombie jelly. Or, leave town and find another more fuel-efficient vehicle. Or blow stuff (like streets full of zombies) the hell up.
