It is simply a historical fact that schools & universities in the West were largely founded, funded, & operated by the church. Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, even pre-Reformation institutions like Oxford or the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, both taken over by official Protestantism– the roots of colleges are grounded in the Christian conviction that the study of God and his world are of great value. Even the general UK school-system arose from Sunday schools, which first introduced literacy, and free education for ordinary children, whose parents could not afford private school system fees.

That was then. Now we come to the utter reversal of the historical precedent, where Leftist radical academics are keeping their eagle eye on them danged Christers and their scary school-agenda, because such colleges would like Christians to teach there. You know, atheism or other religion being some sort of disability which must be accommodated.
One presumes we’re not likely to see an exhaustive CAUT inquest into the prevalence of NDP/ Liberal voters, progressives, Marxists, or agnostics amongst the majority of university professors. In the U.S., Republicans and conservatively-minded professors are widely and openly discriminated against; one can imagine similar things happen in Canada, but– since we’re “polite” folks– aren’t talked about so much.

Clearly, even though it’s conservatives who get shut down and shot down and threatened by campus militants and administrations across the country, sites like campusconservativewatch.ca assure us there are anti-liberal pogroms and secret conspiracies everywhere. Very open-minded, that– treating intellectual & political opponents as ‘enemies’ who must be ‘watched’. Full Marx for radicalizing the legitimate differences in opinion that characterize a healthy intellectual & academic life, eh wot?

Our educational system is so biased, that the hard Leftist slant is taken to be “normal”, with the allowable extremes to be moderate Leftism all the way to extreme Leftism. With Confederation, the French Canadian appetite for largess re-emerged, with endless shenanigans about the trans-Canada railway, the provincial national debt, and the threat that without special Federal money (not offered to other provinces, of course), they’d not join Canada.

The better instincts of Quebec people need to come into play here, so not treat our debt-ridden nation as a cash-cow, with themselves as at the front, middle, and end of the line-up. The spines of other Canadians need to firm up, to refuse ‘special treatment’ for one part of Confederation over the others. Indeed, despite all the fire-works of the 1995 Referendum, we essentially see what a “separate” Quebec would be like– kinda like a post-college slacker son endlessly coming home for food, laundry, loans, and a bedroom. ~
Opening Your Treasures

~ I AM A SHAMELESS popularizer– that is, interpreting and opening up stuff via blogging, teaching, writing, or whatever to make those treasures which belong to them available to everyone.
Ivory tower wankerhood seems to me a waste of brains & effort, and sets up that dreadful “Expert Uber Alles” thing. History, the Bible, theology, literature, genealogy, archaeology, all sorts of other things belong to folk– and properly taught & made clear, people actually can learn, enjoy, and take possession of their material, religious, intellectual and civilizational history.
That’s why I like shows like BBC’s Time Team: not that the show iself teaches you everything, but at least it makes things accessible to the public. Again, the History Channel and Discovery Channel offer heaps of the same interesting programming. Binks geek-spasms ensue.
Forbidden Old Material
Old stuff, old thoughts, old music. art & architecture, poetry and writing are dangerous to the technically-minded utopian sorts: it distracts from The Now, and The Utopia To Come. It opens up the mind & soul, and acts like a ambush or a hidden bomb– that’s why Communists & fascists were big into creating their own style, and rounding up professors and clergy and authors and other rabble-rousing types. Again, the radicalization of the academy under the insidious influence of The Frankfurt School and other forms of fashionable but destructive ideology applied to the past, as well as the normal human tendency to distance the Ivory Tower from the ordinary folk.
As I’ve said before, Anthony Esolen’s simply excellent The Politically Incorrect Guide To Western Civilization is a good introduction to such things. If schools don’t teach it, then teach it to yourself, your kids & grandkids. Don’t worry if such braining makes your head hurt– you have to stretch your mind & soul to learn & grow in such things. Then the ancient classics, the Roman writing & history, medieval stuff like Dante, Shakespeare.
Once you get into such stuff– and patiently listened to the folks who came before so we can understand them on their own terms– then they and past centuries become our own country & neighbourhood again, and we can think in terms of centuries instead of the last five minutes, the latest political or cultural fads & fancies, and of those who have gone before as our friends & relatives, and the vote and thought of the past as bearing real moral, intellectual, and spiritual weight.
Remembering Ourselves
The pushback has begun against those educators who for excuses of the ‘boredom’ of past generations of students– or perhaps ‘multiculturalism’, or the dusty old justification of ‘relevance’– have abolished the classics & Latin, Western Civ, and the many & various treasures of the West. Oddly enough, many modern schoolkids in Canada, for example, know more about Black History Month and the crimes of evil white Europeans against noble native persons than they do their own history– Teh Binklings have all sorts of that stuff– but if I ask them if they’ve learnt anything about Scotland or Ireland, or Scots-Irish immigration to the province (actually named ‘New Scotland’ in teh Latin), they’ve learned nothing of that. Oddly enough.
It’s all ours, yours, future generations’ the stuff we need to remember, reclaim, and assert the true and good and beautiful things of our Western inheritance. ~
Ye Newfangled Bard
~ SO TEH BINKS has been doing some Shaky Bill (Shakespeare) in a triple fashion: Julius Caesar in text (book, online text), BBC video, and alongside the online text of Roman historian Suetonius on the 12 Caesars. It’s one of the cool ways in which teh evil intertoobs allows for new ways to study of good stuff.
As the old saying has it, to retain something it helps to see & hear it, then repeat it. I’m not actually trying to memorize the thing– just get the bits together, and get familiar. Back in hi skool we did Romeo & Juliet, plus MacBeth — including seeing a Shakespeare play at a local theatre, and the 1968 Zeferelli Romeo & Juliet movie with the deeply lovely young Olivia Hussey– who later starred as Mary in Jesus of Nazareth. She’s more recently done voice acting for video-games, and a 2006 movie on Mother Teresa.
Sadly, the 80’s BEEB Complete Shakespeare isn’t for sale in North America, so I have to watch it online– or rent it from the local artsy DVD/ movie shack.
I figger before any imbibing more Bill via Branagh or otherwise modernized Shaky Bill, I’ll master the low-key but who’s-whom BBC Shakespeare first.* ~

~ TEH BINKS LOVES Rome movies– except the 2002 Julius Caesar, “starring” the uninspiring and monotony-prone Jeremy Sisko (Law & Order‘s Det. Lupo). Imagine: great wardrobe, big scenes, with Chris Noth, Richard Harris, and (no, I’m not kidding), Christopher “More Cowbell” Walken as Cato (the only redeeming player). And yet, despite such, it’s not worth 5 minutes of HBO’s Rome.. or Spartacus.. or hitting yourself with a pillow repeatedly.
Sadly, the writing & dialogue is stiff; the departures from history and fact many and egregious, even to an amatuer Rome-nerd like myself; rather like Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, too much of the history & detail is relegated to mere scenery and decoration. Sadly, history is always sacrificed in too many modern productions because (a) the audiences are considered idiots, and many indeed don’t know history; (b) some producer said “Lets do a Rome-thing” without worrying about messy detail, facts, and actual stuff the original people actually said & did.
It looks nice– but it’s a wretched, fact-free & pretty mess, not worth your time, even with The Walken.
Yes, Jeremy Sisko was in another remarkable disaster, a 2000 TV-movie of the life of Jesus, only memorable for a very imaginative depiction of the Temptations in the Wilderness. ~

To recover our sanity, we must remember what it was like before Salman Rushdie, the Lebanon Barracks Bombing, and the Ayatollah; let alone 9/11 or 7/7. That’s 1700 yearly, give or take, and thousands of corpses, bombed & burnt churches, broken lives, and broken laws– all in the name of Allah.
We need to recover a sense of normal, then of outrage, then of determination that the bastards (of whatever gender) shall not enslave our minds nor our Civilization, nor twist or toss our laws because of their failed sharia mindset. Show me where– recently– sharia has produced literacy, freedom, true tolerance, advances in medicine or science or astronomy or philosophy.
Hurray for the early Middle Ages, where places like the Norman Sicilian kingdom, or Baghdad, or other places where Christians and Muslims together did some amazing things. Until the Imams shut it all down, deeming reason to be unIslamic. So the Islamic dark ages were self-induced– and lasted largely until the 20th century, where once again aspects of Western civilization were copied or taken on– primarily the technology & weaponry & PR/ spin-mastering.
Other than that, most Muslim nations are still trapped in the worst of the Medieval era.. not least in mindset and ‘recovering the golden age’ aspiration. That explains the longing for so many Islamists for a paradisal ‘Caliphate’ where all shall be well, and the infidels enslaved and taxed to bits, and everyone can go to sleep again.
Force Feeding
Except Western modernity is global: music, commercialism, fast-food, DVDs, TV, pron, and all the rest. The world is like those geese they force-feed for pate de foie gras: overstuffed with mass-culture, much of it vile, frivilous, or demented. The Islamosphere must conquer and silence this insane culture, to recapture its own voice uber alles.
Sadly, due to their devotion to the gods of MultiCulti, many politicians bend the knee to the hate-cult that wills their destruction and enslavement. So David Cameron’s recent idiocy of pandering to the Turkish desire to annex Europe via EU-membership.. he simply can’t & wont understand 1400 years of Jihad & Euro-history, ancient or recent. ~
