~ WATCHING IRAN: Teh Binks’ take? The canned pre-arranged election went tea-party on the mullahs. Even if that’s not the case, the plebs are getting uppity over there, and the bosses don’t like it.

Here in Canada, we have petty would-be tyrants bossing people around for their own good. In Iran, they’ve had 30 years of the fully-monty misery, and it looks like the regime is in trouble.

Dictatorships love faux-elections, with the inevitable 99.5% turnout, and all that. As far as I can tell, this was supposed to be yet another one in Czar Mullah-run style, but the kids are getting uppity (gee, sounds like 1979, except those kids are now the tyrant geezers in charge), can Twitter, e-mail, YouTube, and have sent a clear message to the elites and the world that Persian folks are tired of theocracy and canned elections, worried about nuclear war, and don’t particularly care for their rulers.

The other guy in the election doesn’t matter, in one sense– freedom-loving university students, women’s rights activists and others have been disappearing or rotting in jail or turning up dead for years– even if we didn’t pay much attention to them. Shame on us.

An Ancient People

Why do I say ‘Persian’? Because before Islam steamrolled her ancient (and indeed, partly Christianized) culture, this is one of the old great nations of the ancient world, feared by all, then conquered by Alexander, then risen again under new kings. The mighty monuments of old Persia still stand– though the mullahs were mulling bulldozing the lot, since for Islam, anything ‘before’ is essentially ‘the time of evil’.

When I see skin-colour, I ask ‘Who are they– what do they think?’ and not ‘all Arabs/ Persians/ Muslims are retards. I remember a refugee of the ’79 Revolution who came to university in Canada, and told us of what he was escaping– he spoke 4 or 5 languages, was funny, well-read, politically serious, and a good guy– and he taught me and my immature teen friends some naughty Iranian curses. Plus he loved D&D.

Sure the former Shah of Iran sucked in certain ways– like the Russian Tsar, or the French King: and the horrible slaughter and many-times worse revolutions that overthrew them were so very much worse. Revolutions eat their children, and then their grandchildren: the reform becomes the revolt becomes the new tyrants. The Tsar’s feeble internal security and a few hundred in detention becomes the KGB, and 25 millions in the Gulags.

Looking Elsewhere

Iraq sits next door, having a much freer system, and actual elections that mean something– the grass is greener over the fence.

Despite the usual patterns of politics and diplomacy, this is one of those quirky moments when a whole people are galvanized by an idea of freedom. And the Persian people will remember this time, whether better days come sooner or later for them: that American, Canada, and the world stood for them, and let their voices be heard, when their own masters would not listen, or only respond with violence and death.

Remembering

They will remember these days: that we watched, spoke out,stood with them– (don’t do that Iran internet-blocking thing: it mostly hurts the good guys)? This may be one of those moments that changes the life of a people and the world, without the big names and important occasions– and even aside from the bumbling utopian intentions of the Greatest POTUS Ever.

Militant head-cracking Shari’a Islamic Theocracy is not the best that the world has to offer. God loves his people, and would have them set free, to live to the full, and worship, and bring forward all the best of who they are and could and should be. ~

~ JUST GOTTA SAY IT— I Love the TV-show NCIS, just finished season 6, with a sweet cliffhanger. It is a profoundly conservative, politically incorrect show from that conservative and politically incorrect producer & screenwriter Donald P. Bellisario, mastermind of “Magnum, P.I., Airwolf, Quantum Leap, JAG, and NCIS. Less-known creations include Tales of the Gold Monkey, Tequila & Bonetti and First Monday. He was also writer/producer on Black Sheep Squadron and the original Battlestar Galactica“.

It’s all about the actors and the writing: almost never a false note, and the writing is crisp– almost sparse– and sparkles with intelligence, seriousness, and humour. It’s a very human show.

The show deals in good/ evil, topical issues, the life & death costs of the current Jihad, and so much more. Plus, we get to see the CIA, FBI, and Mossad in action, with more than a whiff of Tom Clancy. Bellisario is neither peacenik or warmonger– nor a antihero worshipper– but rather a teller of stories of our time. If you’ve not seen it, the DVD season are on Amazon, and re-runs through the Summer on North American TV.

The Horror, The Horror!

~ ITEM: WEAPONS OF DOOM! — Obama To Outlaw….Pocket Knives?? Really?

~ ITEM: (And they can have my knife when they pry it from my cold dead hands….)

Next up: a new rocks, fists, pointy sticks, baseball bat Czar, plus bureaucracy and enforcement? It’s worked SO well in Britain over the last little while. Citified idios who have never earned a blister in their lives have no idea that for most users, a jack-knife is a handy tool, not a bloody toy or a weapon.

Until the last century or so, people carried them everywhere; in the middle ages, people had dinner-knife sized things on their belts for eating, self-defense, and general purposes. Banning knives (like “gun free zones”) is a feel-good measure at best, ensuring that only criminals have knives.. at worst, it’s another effort to disarm and render defenceless individual Americans, in order to make everyone depend ever more on the government, and the police (when they arrive, 45 minutes later).

Any weapon or tool requires training– for almost everyone, that makes them safer to themselves and others. Thus, given that there are millions of martial artists, military people, construction workers, and ordinary folks with such knives, we don’t see mad slasher events in every corner of the U.S. or Canada.

Indeed, as the possibly gun-toting Kathy Shaidle and others have remarked, if a few of the folks in the Ecole Polytechnique had recognized the piddly .22 rifle that Ghamil Gharbi (a.k.a. Marc Lepine) was brandishing, it wasn’t an M-16 let alone a heavy assault rifle like a AK-47, however scary it looked. The point? All those women died because nobody in the room– in the new, safer, peaceful Trudeaupistan– had proper gun-training. A .22 can kill, but not easily, plus unlike larger bullets, it has little stopping power. A 9mm or .357 or AK-47 will knock you on your ass, and make big holes. A .22 will really, really, really hurt– but barring a critical hit, won’t stop or kill you. After all, the police– with guns, bullet-proof vests, and riot-gear, often don’t enter a building until after the murdering is done.

Thus, several of the heroes on the doomed Flight 93 had various kinds of weapons and combat training: they weren’t violent crazy people, but ordinary folks who realized that They™ will not always be there to save you, and that a stand-up prepared citizenry is the first line of defence for life and freedom, and personal safety for you and your loved ones/ neighbours.

Resist the infantilizing pressures of the all-encompassing state; train your kids and grandkids to use tools and weapons properly; and remember– the best defence against hate-crimes and rape is a little judiciously-appled weapon therapy. ~

~ I’M NO ECONOMIST, but watching Obama flashing out plans for a trillion here and a trillion there (on top of the new uber-bloated budget, that is), I think we’re seeing how liberals think. Money comes from government and taxes on bad rich people and evil corporations and suchlike. Said money should be spread around so everybody gets some, for the sake of fairness– andto the government for special lprojects, since they know best for everyone.

OK, so I’m oversimplifying, but not by much: money simply pops into existence from nothing, for progressives. It’s like a child’s view: money comes from parents. The question never arises “and where parents get it from, and how?” until later maturity and Sumemr jobs kick in.

So Obama has spent 11-12 TRILLIONS of imaginary magic-money in his proposed USSA Utopia of Barack. He’s been printing money, too. That’s where it comes from. You know, just like as a legacy kid at an ivy League university– money just shows up, and then you spend it.

Except: it comes from people, productive companies, and people getting paid for working, and investment, and creating products and turning raw materials into useful things, and sweat, and all the rest. You know , real econonomics. And corporations are people working for other people (shareholders), by making money– for example– taking oil out of the ground to turn it into gas, or teleprompter parts, or fuel for Obama’s Jet. Nothing just happens, except grass and bugs and the sunshine. All the rest is 15 000 years+ of organized civilization, and in the case of America, 400+ years of bloody hard work, saving, investing, and making the world a better and more prosperous place than you found it.

So– by one estimate I saw somewhere– each Canadian at birth inherits about $450K each of What Others Built Up & Passed On– roads, buildings, wires, schools, infrastructure, hospitals, military.. anything that isn’t trees, land, water, and plants and such. We start ahead not because of the largess of government, but because of the work of others over centuries. Big Government is an unproductive 20th century invention.

Bureaucracy and taxes are economy-killers; and the feel-good “free health care”? Three lies for the price of one, that will cripple the already bankrupting American economy, cost jobs, close companies, and result in less health-care, rationing, and more bureaucracy (and lots more taxes). It’s a bottomless money pit, and a massive fail.

Thus, as Obama cuts and slashes and spends with no apparent understanding of how the real world works, the consequences and economic trickle-down will be real, and potentially catastrophic. Fiddling with corporations, health care, taxes to pay for all the magic new stuff.. it comes from somewhere, and will disappear from somewhere else. Crushing American productivity and ignoring record-high unemployment (thus declining tax-receipts for the government) = more debt, hence more imaginary money to be paid back somewhere, somehow.. money yet to be earned, invested, and mostly produced by the real activity of actual people and companies.

Obama is like a kid, borrowing money from imaginary parents, who just get money from ‘somewhere’. ~

~ LIKE ANY interweb thingy, Twitter can be overhyped and underwhelming. However, it’s re-vivifying the immediacy of the web, where e-mail and too many blogs have actually slowed things down: there are only so many hours in a day. But that blessed 140-word per post thing: fast, simple, and you can read a couple hundred in a few minutes.

Plus, it shrinks the world: there are various big politicos and high/ mighty blogger-types who now read this blog because of Twitter– and just today I got a useful link I’d missed via a post from Fred Thompson (or whomever Tweets for him).

It won’t do your laundry, cure world hunger, or any other such utopian whatnot: but it’s a timely, powerful tool that’s getting people back in touch, and speeding news along like no other current application. It’s much more of a community than a geek-thing, and deadly easy to understand & use. A program like TweetDeck helps keep everything a little more user-friendly.

~ A LONG TIME AGO, children were tortured in schools with boring facts that hurt their heads, tests and exams, grammar and hard languages, old stuff, and their tender feelings and inner creativity were trampled like so much sidewalk. So experts made the school curriculum much more fun, and easier, and got rid of old boring torture-type stuff– and extended basic education over a comfy 12 years. You don’t even need to read to graduate these days! And university? Really more like High School, now.

Except– grammar and Shakespeare and Latin and Poetry and Ancient Histry and French and German and all that turns out to be pretty important for being an actually well-educated person; with the capacity to analyse, understand, and be connected with the fullness of Western Civilization. Often, people discover these things later in life, or despite the curriculum, and realize that they were short-changed by modern ‘relevant’ curricula of the politically correct variety. Instead of thinking, too much education is about downloading the ‘correct’ opinions on debatable societal issues like global warming or same-sexuality or diversity and the worthlessness of your own culture and history.

Thankfully, though 40-50 years of education has been dumbed down, we needn’t despair. Books, old texts, and all sorts of stuff has been put online. Free.

To follow up on Miss Orwell’s Picnic, you can learn Latin and Greek online, and through all sorts of resources. “LatinStudy is an open mailing list dedicated to the study of Latin, including Classical, Medieval, and Neo-Latin authors”– you do assignments with a workbook (via Amazon.com), and learn and ask questions by e-mail to a forum. Free. Cool, huh?

Dumbing down the sheeple via much public education and university is all about making them incapable of thinking and disagreeing with the status quo and chattering classes. Education becomes indoctrination: citizenship becomes nanny-state dependence; and all too often, people don’t even realize what was stolen from them, nor the treasures of art, language, and wisdom that rightly belongs to them.
